Demand for rice-based products such as rice paper, noodles, and pho is rising sharply in many countries. In particular, South Korea and Japan are increasingly familiar with Vietnamese dried pho, some even enjoy eating it every day.

With significant export potential still available, many producers are planning to expand their production capacity. Simultaneously, they build brands for rice-based products, with a particular focus on Vietnamese dried pho.

As an leading exporter of Vietnamese dried pho, Agrideco Vietnam Co., Ltd stated that the company’s export volume has steadily increased every year. Among the main export markets, South Korea, Canada, the United States, and Europe, growth has remained stable. In which, South Korea has been standing out as a particularly strong performer.

According to another company, pho exports to South Korea reach four containers per month. However, during peak periods, monthly export volume even reached five to six containers, nearly double compared to the previous year.

“With growing demand, Vietnam’s dried pho can now be considered a favorite dish among many South Koreans and Japanese,” this company affirmed. “When people think of pho, many immediately associate it with Vietnam.”

South Korea accounts for about 30–40% of the company’s pho exports. “Traditional pho from Vietnam is particularly favored in these markets. Therefore, it has remained our core pho product in recent years. However, with decades of production experience and expanding production scale, we can meet new requirements from our partners,” the representative said.

“Vietnam has similarities in culinary culture with other Asian countries, such as Japan and South Korea. Also, the Vietnamese communities in such countries have been increasing. Production capacity of many domestic enterprises has been improving. They are the main reasons why export opportunities for Vietnamese dried vermicelli and pho continue to expand,” Ms. Chi noted.

According to export businesses, Vietnam is one of the world’s leading producers of rice-based products. Also, consumers in South Korea and Japan have a strong preference for these products. This represents a significant advantage. However, Vietnam’s export market for vermicelli, pho, and similar products has only truly expanded in recent years. In addition, it still accounts for only a small share in demanding markets such as Europe, Japan, and South Korea.

A representative from a food export company said that while Japan has ramen and South Korea has udon, Vietnam proudly offers pho. Nevertheless, in terms of branding, Vietnamese pho has yet to reach the same recognition as ramen or udon.

“Therefore, it is necessary to further promote the branding and image development of rice-based products in general, and pho in particular. If properly leveraged, export value of Vietnamese rice-based products will increase significantly,” the representative said.

According to experts, to effectively commercialize iconic Vietnamese food products like pho, businesses must invest and build their brands more systematically. Moreover, it is neccessary for receiving support from government agencies to elevate brands such as ‘Vietnamese pho’ to a higher level.
