Despite numerous challenges, the first-ever export of Vietnamese guava marks a promising new direction for this agricultural product. Following the success of lychee and longan, the path to international markets is now opening up for Hai Duong guava.
The first five tons of Vietnamese guava are preparing to dock at a seaport in Dubai. This will bring hope and excitement to Hai Duong guava farmers. If this shipment is succesfful to customers, it could open up broader export opportunities for the fruit. Farmers would have more control over market access and enjoy better prices.

Having cultivated Vietnamese guava for nearly 20 years, Mr. Nhi, a local farmer, excited that his family sold fresh guava for export at a price twice as high as the local market rate. Although the order size is modest, it gives him confidence in the fruit’s future.
According to Mr. Nhi, while farmers have long mastered intensive cultivation techniques to improve yield and quality. However, they remain heavily dependent on traders for sales. This has led to unstable prices, and at times, farmers had to accept breaking even or even incurring losses. “If Vietnam’s guava can reach demanding international markets, it will significantly enhance the product’s value. This has been the dream of local guava growers for years,” he emphasized.
After successfully exporting Hai Duong lychee and longan to demanding markets, Agrideco Vietnam Co., Ltd is confident in taking Hai Duong’s guava abroad. A company representative shared that they have spent years surveying and evaluating Hai Duong’s agricultural potential. Accordingly, they identified Vietnam’s guava as one of the most promising products for export.

As a result, they purchased five tons of Vietnamese guava for a trial export to Dubai. If customer feedback is positive, the company plans to scale up production and expand to more markets. They are targeting long-term partners in Singapore, Australia, and the EU.
However, this remains a plan, as actual export success depends on many factors. Agrideco Vietnam Co., Ltd is not the only company pursuing Vietnam’s guava exports. Several other enterprises, both within and outside the province, are also exploring opportunities to bring this fruit to high-standard international markets.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, a number of companies have interest in fresh guava in Hai Duong. They have contacted in the authorities to seek support in purchasing, processing, and preserving guava for export to Russia, Japan, and the European Union.

Hai Duong province currently has 2,100 hectares of guava cultivation. In which, Thanh Ha district has the largest cultivation area with 1,600 hectares. Guava trees are less dependent on weather conditions and it is easy to regulate flowering and fruiting. Therefore, it will cause guava cultivation area increasingly popular. Guava is also a high-value fruit crop, with a production value of approximately VND 220 million per hectare per year.
However, the guava market remains unstable, and farmers often have to sell their produce through informal channels. The potential for guava exports is a positive signal that could improve the crop’s competitiveness. Under current plans, the province aims to expand guava cultivation to 3,000 hectares by 2030. This will include maintaining Thanh Ha as the largest guava cultivation area. Also, it will expand cultivation to other localities such as Ninh Giang, Kim Thanh, Kinh Mon, and Chi Linh.
Despite growing interest from businesses, there are still many barriers to exporting Vietnamese guava successfully. In reality, Vietnamese guava has already entered several major markets, but the main growing areas are located in the southern provinces. Most exported guava is the Thai pear guava variety, known for its attractive appearance and high quality.

Meanwhile, farmers in Hai Duong mainly grow the “oi bo” variety, which produces large, high-yield fruits but with inconsistent sizes. Export markets place strong emphasis on appearance, making it more challenging to select suitable fruits for export from this variety.
While guava cultivation is relatively weather-resistant, guava quality is still significantly affected by climate conditions. In Hai Duong, guava is at its best during the autumn-winter season, when the dry, sunny weather.
In other seasons, guava quality often declines, with issues such as hollow cores. As a result, Hai Duong’s guava cannot be exported year-round like in southern regions. This is a major obstacle to sustaining long-term interest from exporters.
According to Ms. Ha, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, fresh guava is a key agricultural product of the province. Therefore, promoting Hai Duong guava exports is a crucial strategy to increase its value. Currently, Hai Duong guava is produced according to VietGAP standards. This certification serves as a “passport” to enter demanding international markets.

Also, the department is actively guiding farmers to care for their crops in accordance with technical instructions to meet export requirements, with special attention given to traceability. In the upcoming production season, the department will work closely with businesses to ensure successful guava exports to major markets. This not only brings economic benefits but also lays the foundation for strategic development of guava cultivation in the province moving forward.
