In the 2025 winter crop, Vinh Thuan commune became the first of seven communes in Hai Phong city to pilot Vietnam’s jicama cultivation. More specifically, the commune has piloted in An Cau hamlet’s fields.
Mr. Trinh Doan Thuyet is the head of the economic and infrastructure division of Vinh Thuan commune. He said that in order to promote crop restructuring in the locality, several farming households piloted jicama cultivation during the 2025 winter crop season. This activity took place on vegetable-growing land in An Cau hamlet’s fields.

Vietnam’s jicama cultivation
The pilot of Vietnam’s jicama cultivation covered an area of more than one hectare and involved 10 farming households. Vinh Thuan is the first of seven communes in the city to introduce Vietnamese jicama on a pilot basis, with initial positive results. The crop has grown and developed well, showing early suitability to local soil and field conditions.
Farmers are currently harvesting, with yields reaching more than 1.5–1.6 tons per sao. Especially, the jicama roots are large, well-shaped and fairly sweet. Currently, they are being purchased directly in the fields by Vietnamese companies at prices ranging from 10,000 to 12,000 VND per kilogram.
According to growers, compared with rice and other crops, jicama offers higher economic efficiency and is easier to market. Under normal conditions, one sao can generate revenues of 15–16 million VND, or even higher. In addition, cultivation and care are relatively simple, requiring no advanced techniques or high production costs.
In 2026, the commune plans to encourage farmers to expand the jicama-growing area to 10 hectares. Accordingly, this expansion will take place in An Cau hamlet’s fields and several other locations across the commune.
