Hau Giang province: Growing Vietnam’s seedless lemons brings high profits

Vietnam's seedless lemons

Vietnam’s seedless lemons are easy to grow, have few pests and diseases. In addition, they offer high yields and have a stable market. Therefore, local farmers in Hậu Giang Province have chosen Vietnamese seedless limes to widely cultivate.

Mr. Nguyễn Văn Dư is a local farmer from Đông Phước Commune, Châu Thành District, Hậu Giang Province. He has been attaching to Vietnam’s seedless lemons for more than 10 years in his land. He said: ” My family can plant 80 Vietnamese seedless lime trees with one công of land. After about 24 months, the trees begin to bear fruit. By the fourth year, the yield reaches about 4 tons of fruit per công’.

Each year, even when the price of Vietnam’s seedless lemons drops, it still stays above 5,000 VND per kilogram. Normally, the price ranges around 15,000 VND per kilogram, and in some years even exceeds 30,000 VND per kilogram. Calculated, one công of lime trees brings an annual income of 40 to 60 million VND.

Mr. Dư also shared that since growing Vietnamese seedless lime, harvests have become more stable. Also, the economic well-being of local farmers has steadily improved. With one hectare, the annual income can reach around 400 million VND.

Therefore, many farmers in Châu Thành District have switched from other crops to growing seedless limes on their land. Leading this shift are farmers in Đông Thạnh Commune. They came together to establish the Thạnh Phước Agricultural Cooperative.

They could exchange production techniques, learn how to care for Vietnam’s seedless lemons, and seek markets for their products. Initially, the cooperative started with 19 members. It has now grown to 84 members, cultivating nearly 100 hectares of seedless limes.

The Cooperative has applied the Vietgap and Globalgap standards for Vietnam’s seedless lemons. With support from the provincial agricultural sector, members of the Cooperative carried out the necessary procedures.

Notably, four years ago, the Cooperative received the trademark certificate for “Hậu Giang seedless lime”. Currently, the Cooperative serves as the main distributor. Accordingly, it purchases limes from local farmers for export to many countries in large quantities.

Mr. Nguyễn Văn Chiến is the Director of the Thạnh Phước Agricultural Cooperative. He said that several Vietnamese import-export companies have partnered with the cooperative to export limes to Middle Eastern and European countries.

Hậu Giang Province currently has more than 3,000 hectares of Vietnam’s seedless lemons. In which, Châu Thành District accounts for nearly 1,000 hectares.

Mr. Nguyễn Văn Bảy is the Secretary of the Châu Thành District Party Committee. Regarding the development direction for this crop, he said that the district is implementing a large-scale field model for seedless limes.

Accordingly, using funds from the agricultural development budget, the district will initially support farmers in the designated large-field area with 5,000 seedlings. It will also provide guidance on establishing Globalgap standards and assist farmers in building automatic irrigation systems in their lime orchards.

The district will also help improve and upgrade dikes, sluices, and transportation routes serving the large-field model. In particular, the district aims to attract businesses to sign purchasing contracts with farmers.

He added that the goal is to expand the Vietnam’s seedless lemons to about 1,300 hectares. To create a demonstration site and showcase the effectiveness of seedless lime production, the district has coordinated with the province, especially the agricultural sector.

They have planned a 50-hectare seedless lime production zone in Phú An Commune. This will serve as a foundation for establishing a production chain and providing product consumption guarantees for farmers in Châu Thành District.

Currently, in Châu Thành, Thạnh Phước Agricultural Cooperative and other buyers purchase more than 40 tons of fresh seedless limes per day. However, supply remains insufficient. The development of a large-scale seedless lime field with a closed production process will help partly meet this demand.

At the same time, it will serve as a model for farmers to visit and exchange experiences. They can also learn how to implement a closed production process that can be applied to other crops.
