In the first nine months of 2025, Vietnam’s durian exports reached $2.77 billion. Accordingly, they continued to be a highlight in Vietnam’s agricultural exports.
Mr. Tran Quoc Toan is Deputy Director of the Import-Export Department of Dong Thap province. According to him, the durian sector has seen remarkable breakthrough developments in recent years. Specifically, the cultivation area has increased nearly sixfold over the past decade, reaching nearly 180,000 hectares. In addition, production quantity exceeded 1.5 million tons in 2024.

Vietnam’s durian exports
Notably, the successful signing of the export protocols for fresh durian (July 2022) and frozen durian (August 2024) with China has opened a golden gateway to this enormous market. As a result, Vietnam’s durian exports grew significantly, surpassing $3 billion in 2024.
In 2025, durian continues to be a highlight in Vietnamese agricultural exports. Particularly, in the first nine months of 2025, Vietnam’s durian exports reached $2.77 billion. This total included 717,000 tons of fresh durian ($2.4 billion), 81,000 tons of frozen durian ($356.8 million), and processed durian totaling $2.8 million.
Export markets have expanded to the United States, Malaysia, and beyond. Notably, the potential for frozen durian exports will remain a bright spot due to its stability and long shelf life.
Currently, many Vietnamese enterprises are ready to invest in modern processing lines and cold storage facilities. They aim to meet the standards of China and other potential markets such as South Korea, Japan, and European countries.

Frozen durian from Vietnam
Alongside trade growth, Vietnam’s durian exports have improved its capacity to meet the strict technical standards of import markets. A notable achievement is successfully establishing and operating a database for cultivation area codes and packing facilities.
This system, connected from the central to local levels, is an essential tool for transparent traceability and quality management. In addition, multiple value chain linkage models (production – procurement – processing – export) have been developed and are proving effective.
On May 21, 2025, China officially approved the addition of 829 cultivation area codes and 131 durian packing facility codes from Vietnam for export to the Chinese market. In particular, this approval facilitates the 2025 durian export season and the years ahead.
Mr. Nguyen Tuan Linh is the Deputy Director of the Dong Thap Department of Industry and Trade. He said that Dong Thap is one of the provinces with the largest durian cultivation area in the Mekong Delta. More specifically, it has 34,361 hectares of production land and an estimated output of 506,595 tons.

Currently, Dong Thap has 377 durian cultivation areas (489 codes) covering 14,843.93 hectares. The province accounts for more than 43% of the total cultivation area. Among these, export-designated areas include 393 codes covering 14,011.7 hectares. Of these, 350 codes are for exports to China, and 43 codes are for exports to markets such as Japan, the EU, and Russia.
Statistics show that the turnover of durian export from Dong Thap has grown significantly in recent years. As a result, it reflected the sector’s strong development potential.
In the first ten months of 2025, the province’s fruit and vegetable exports were estimated at 167,970 tons, valued at $236.54 million. Among these, durian exports reached an estimated 50,980 tons, valued at approximately $170.27 million, mainly exported to South Korea, the US, and China.
These positive export results provide a solid foundation for the durian industry to continue building a responsible and tightly controlled value chain. They also highlight the sector’s great potential and prospects in contributing strongly to the country’s overall import-export growth targets.
