The official export of the first batch of Vietnam’s macadamia exports to Japan marks a significant milestone. This development will create numerous opportunities for macadamia nuts to access the global market.
In the past week, there has been more good news for Vietnam’s agricultural exports. The first batch of Vietnamese macadamia nuts has received official export permission to the Japanese market.
This market is renowned for being high-end and particularly demanding, especially when it comes to Vietnamese agricultural products. Therefore, gaining access to the Japanese market also means broader opportunities for Vietnam’s macadamia exports worldwide.

The negotiation period has lasted more than eight months. Then, the Japanese importer confirmed that Vietnam’s macadamia exports met the strict technical requirements. Finally, a six-ton batch of dried macadamia nuts from a Vietnamese exporting company, officially received the export approval to Japan.
“We were able to meet both parties’ procedures regarding the quality of test samples, in accordance with Japanese regulations. After that, we sent the sample shipment,” said Ms. Phuong, Director of this company.
Mr. Takuro Ohtsuka is the director of the Japanese importer named Olty Co., Ltd. He commented: “Vietnam’s macadamia nuts are comparable in quality to those from Australia or Southern Africa sold in Japan. The Japanese market currently has a strong demand for macadamia nuts from Vietnam. Therefore, I think this is a great opportunity for us to cooperate in this field.”
With the first batch of macadamia products officially exported to Japan, many opportunities will arise for Vietnam’s macadamia exports. This milestone paves the way for them to reach the global market. Japan is an important partner in Vietnam’s free trade agreements. It is also currently one of the largest consumers of macadamia nuts in the world.

“When Vietnamese macadamia products have entered a demanding market like Japan, the opportunity to reach other potential markets such as Europe and the United States will be very favorable. In the coming time, the Ministry of Industry and Trade will support promotional activities and brand-building efforts to help macadamia products expand even further,” said Mr. Khoi, an expert.
After arriving in Japan, starting from December 1, the dried macadamia nuts will be displayed and sold in 180 supermarkets in major Japanese cities. It is expected that in February 2023, Olty Company will showcase Vietnam’s macadamia exports at the largest food exhibition in Japan. At the same time, the company will introduce and distribute Vietnamese macadamia nuts to numerous retailers across the country.
Japan is also known as one of the largest consumers of macadamia nuts in the world. Currently, global demand for macadamia exceeds total production by four times. This presents an opportunity for macadamia-growing and exporting countries, including Vietnam.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, global demand for macadamia products is steadily increasing. By 2025, the market will require around 220,000 tons of kernels, equivalent to 850,000 tons of fresh nuts. Therefore, there is still significant potential for Vietnam’s macadamia exports to demanding markets.

Furthermore, compared to many major macadamia-exporting suppliers in the world, Vietnam has an advantage as it has participated in free trade agreements with most of the importing markets. With Vietnamese macadamia entering new markets, it creates opportunities for better sales, higher prices, and consequently, increased income for macadamia growers.
Currently, 29 provinces in Vietnam are cultivating macadamia, with a total area of over 20,000 hectares. The Vietnam Macadamia Association aims to expand this area to 130,000–150,000 hectares by 2030 and achieve exports of over $100 million in macadamia products.
Last year, macadamia production reached more than 8,000 tons of in-shell nuts. This was a very small amount compared to the rapidly growing domestic and global demand.
Alongside expanding cultivation area and increasing production, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development also encourages businesses and cooperatives to invest in processing and value-added production. This will be a key factor in enhancing the competitiveness of Vietnam’s macadamia exports.
