Ninh Thuận: developing specialized farming areas for Vietnam’s green asparaguses

Vietnam's green asparaguses

Vietnam’s green asparaguses are one of the distinctive products of Ninh Thuận province. They developed along a value chain meeting OCOP standards from 3 stars to potential 5 stars. This development opens up new prospects for farmers to improve their incomes and build wealth.

Among the key growing areas is An Hải commune, Ninh Phước district, which is one of the localities with a large asparagus cultivation area in Ninh Thuận province. Thanks to the economic efficiency of asparagus cultivation, the living standards of local farmers have been increasingly improved and enhanced. As a result, members of the Chăm ethnic community have also benefited significantly.

In 2010, An Hải commune began a pilot cultivation of one hectare of Vietnam’s green asparaguses. To date, the commune has expanded its asparagus-growing area to more than 110 hectares. Of this total area, over half belongs to Tuấn Tú General Services Cooperative (Tuấn Tú village). The cooperative provide poor households with seedlings and technical support.

Currently, An Hải mainly grows asparagus varieties imported from the Netherlands, as Vietnam’s green asparaguses offer high yields and good quality. The crop only needs to be replanted after many years. Local farmers say that Vietamese green asparagus is in high market demand and sells at a good price. Additionally, it requires relatively little care and can give harvest almost year-round.

Each hectare yields about 5–7 kg per day, with an average market price of around 50,000 VND per kilogram. On average, during the harvest period, farmers can earn a profit of 300 to 400 million VND per hectare per year.

Identifying Vietnamese asparagus as a key crop, An Hải commune is currently focusing on developing specialized asparagus farming areas. Many asparagus cultivation models in the commune have established strong, mutually beneficial linkages between cooperative members and the cooperative. They have also created linkages between the cooperative and enterprises that purchase and distribute the products.

At the same time, local authorities encourage farmers to expand their asparagus-growing areas. The development orientation for asparagus in An Hải is being implemented in a systematic and scientific manner. Accordingly, mechanisms and policies on investment loans from credit institutions have become more accessible to residents.

Farmers are promoting the application of science and technology in production. Production and marketing linkages among farmers, cooperatives, and export enterprises are becoming increasingly sustainable.

An Hải Commune has recognized that asparagus cultivation cannot develop spontaneously. Also, farmers should organize along a value chain that meets Vietgap standards and moves toward organic production. Therefore, the commune has implemented various solutions to support product consumption for farmers.

In addition to Tuấn Tú General Services Cooperative, the commune has established purchasing groups to help farmers secure stable outlets for their produce. The commune also provides partial support for seedlings, technical assistance, and training courses on production and harvesting processes. As a result, both input supplies and output markets for asparagus have become more stable. This stability contributes to local socio-economic development and increases farmers’ incomes.

In the coming time, An Hải commune will continue reviewing and developing specialized asparagus farming areas. This effort aims to meet domestic consumer demand and move toward export markets.
