Vietnam’s coconut shell charcoal

As materials from coconut by-products, coconut charcoal has become one of the key commercial items in the global coconut industry. As a report, the global export value of coconut shell charcoal will reach $1.09 billion. It ranks fifth after coconut water, coconut oil, shisha charcoal, and coir products.
In Vietnam, the export value of Vietnamese coconut charcoal in 2023 reached $88.5 million. In which, briquette charcoal from coconut shells accounted for nearly $33 million. According to experts, Vietnamese enterprises should ocus on boosting the production and export of shisha charcoal. This product is experiencing strong global demand, as it is increasingly popular in restaurants and households.

Vietnam’s coconut shell charcoal boxes
The utilization of coconut husks and shells to produce coconut charcoal, activated charcoal from coconut shells, and shisha charcoal is contributing to the development of sustainable bioenergy sources and promoting a circular economy within the coconut industry. This, in turn, enhances the economic value of coconut trees and significantly improves the livelihoods of coconut farmers in many countries, including Vietnam.
However, in order to boost the production and export of coconut-based products — especially those derived from by-products — provinces with strong potential for coconut cultivation need to establish dedicated raw material zones. Moreover, coconut resources are currently scattered across various provinces in the Mekong Delta.
Therefore, it is difficult for export enterprises of coconut shell charcoal to collect them efficiently. At times, the company has had to import coconuts from Indonesia to ensure a stable supply of raw materials for producing activated charcoal and other products.”
