
An Hai is a poor commune of Ninh Thuan province. The commune started planting three thousand square meters of Vietnamese asparagus in the year of 2009. Up to now, the planting area has expanded to more than 750 hectares. It has become one of the province’s key agricultural products, bringing high economic efficiency.
Ninh Thuan province has encouraged local farmers to apply scientific and technological advances in asparagus production. As a result, they have shifted from traditional farming methods to Vietgap cultivation models. Several farmers have changed to organic agricultural models in order to enhance the economic value of Vietnamese asparagus.

The province has issued and implemented several mechanisms and policies to support cooperatives in purchasing seedlings. Also, the province has supported in investing in water-saving irrigation systems to implement large-field models.
Moreover, it has helped select high-quality seedlings and properly treated soil before cultivation and apply sprinkler and drip irrigation systems. Finally, it guided to use organic fertilizers according to strict procedures that meet both domestic and export market standards.
Tuan Tu General Services Cooperative is one of the successful high-economic-efficiency asparagus farming models in Ninh Thuan province. The cooperative has continuously expanded its production scale and product quality over the years. Currently, its asparagus achieves a 3-star provincial OCOP (One Commune One Product) of the province.

Mr. Ky, Director of Tuan Tu Cooperative, shared that the cooperative was established in 2016. The cooperative collabrated with 25 member households cultivating Vietnamese asparagus on a total area of 5 hectares.
Today, this group has grown to more than 36 hectares with 85 Cham ethnic minority member households. These farmers has used organic methods to grow green asparagus, from fertilization to disease prevention, according to Vietgap standards.
With a decade of asparagus farming experience, Mr. Ky noted that Vietnamese asparagus brings significant income to farmers. With purchasing prices of around VND 60,000 per kilogram, each hectare of asparagus can yield an average annual profit of about VND 200 million. Over the past three years, the livelihoods of An Hai commune residents have improved significantly.
Not far from Tuan Tu Cooperative lies the 20-hectare Tien Tien Farm, a green oasis amid white sand dunes. Tien Tien’s asparagus has obtained organic certification from seed selection to processing finished product. The farm had a modern factory that located within the farm. It uses 100% organic fertilizers and strictly avoids any chemicals or synthetic inputs in production.

It also uses modern machinery in many farming and care stages. In addition, it uses solar power for operations including: post-harvest processing, cultivation, irrigation, and cold storage. Tien Tien’s fresh and processed asparagus products are consistently high-quality and enjoy a large domestic and export market.
Ninh Thuan province has designated Vietnam’s asparagus as a key crop. Also, the province has plan of developing concentrated asparagus cultivation zones with scientific and standardized farming practices. In addition, it would support mechanisms and policies and foster cooperation between farmers and businesses in production and consumption. As a result, Ninh Thuan is successfully elevating the value and sustainability of asparagus farming in the region.
