Asparagus is a crop originating from Europe, introduced to Vietnam in the 1960s and 1970s. However, it was not until recent years that the green asparagus growing model has developed strongly in the southern provinces.

Green asparagus is suitable for light, loose soils rich in organic nutrients such as dune soil, alluvial river soil. In particular, the two provinces of Bac Lieu and Tra Vinh are very suitable for Vietnam’s asparagus, with outstanding crop yields.
According to experts, Vietnamese asparagus is a plant that we can use all components. In which, young shoots is used as food, stems and leaves are used in flower arrangements, decoration, medicine, cosmetics. After 2 months of planting, growers can harvest the bamboo shoots after 6-8 months of care.
With the current selling price of 70,000 VND/kg, farmers can earn seven million VND per month. Therefore, growing green asparagus brings higher income than cashew and rubber – the province’s main agricultural products.

Asparagus trees in Vietnam
As a nutritious food, the demand for Vietnam’s asparagus is becoming more and more popular. However, it is a new crop, the output is not much, and it is scattered in many localities. Therefore, gathering a large quantity for export is still difficult.
A farmer said that at first, he only had asparagus in his garden, so he had to go to Ho Chi Minh City to sell it. Now, when production has stable, it is not enough to supply orders. “Many people in the area see that growing asparagus sells well. Therefore, they come to learn the trade, buy seedlings to grow together, and they are currently growing very well”, he said.

In Binh Phuoc, due to its good consumption market, the Provincial Farmers’ Association has focused on developing green asparagus. To expand the area of Vietnam’s asparagus, they organize training courses for local farmers.
The province has built a demonstration model with 10 farmer households participating, with a planting scale of one sao per household. They support each household with nearly four million VND to buy seeds, fertilizers and pesticides. In addition, they also send technical staff to the garden to directly participate in monitoring and recording the production process for farmers.

According to a vegetable exporter in Vietnam, green asparagus is popular in many countries around the world. Every day, this company exports around one ton of Vietnam’s asparagus to Japan, Korea and other countries.
This company also grows 50 hectares of asparagus in 40 provinces and cities nationwide to serve domestic consumption and export. “The demand from foreign markets is very large, sometimes ordering dozens of tons/week. However, the company has not been able to meet it because asparagus is difficult to grow. In addition, it requires a lot of care and the area nationwide is not large enough to supply,” said the company manager.
