The Government of India has officially approved the import of fresh Vietnamese durian for consumption. This opens a new export market for the country’s durian industry.
According to Vietnam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, the Embassy of India in Hanoi has announced that the Government of India has issued the Plant Quarantine (Regulation of Import into India) Fifth Amendment Order, 2026, under Notification No. S.O. 3828(E) dated July 9, 2026. The Order was published in the Gazette of India on July 13, 2026. It took effect immediately upon its publication.
Under the new regulation, India has added Vietnam to the list of countries permitted to export fresh durian (Durio zibethinus) for consumption in the Indian market. Notably, the Indian authorities do not require any additional phytosanitary declarations on the Phytosanitary Certificate. They have also not imposed any special import conditions for this product.
India’s official opening of its market to fresh Vietnamese durian is the result of ongoing technical consultations and cooperation between the national plant protection authorities of the two countries. It also reflects the positive development of agricultural and trade relations between Vietnam and India.
India is a vast market with a large population, a growing middle class, and rising demand for high-quality imported agricultural and food products. Access to this market provides Vietnamese exporters with an opportunity to diversify their export destinations, reduce reliance on traditional markets, and further enhance the value and international reputation of Vietnamese durian.
However, India is a new market for Vietnamese durian. During the initial stage, demand is expected to be concentrated mainly in major cities through premium retail chains, imported fruit stores, restaurants, hotels, and e-commerce platforms. Exporters are therefore encouraged to carefully assess consumer preferences, purchasing power, product specifications, transportation methods, and distribution networks. This will help them develop appropriate market entry strategies.
The Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection will continue to coordinate with Indian authorities, relevant units under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Vietnam’s representative offices in India, local authorities, and industry associations. Together, they will guide exporters in implementing shipments. The Department will also promptly address any difficulties or issues that arise during the export process.
The opening of the Indian market to fresh Vietnamese durian is a positive development. However, its long-term success will depend on maintaining consistent product quality, complying with import regulations, building a strong product reputation, and fostering genuine consumer demand. Beyond creating new export opportunities, this milestone also underscores the need to further professionalize Vietnam’s durian production, packaging, post-harvest handling, and export supply chain.
