
According to preliminary statistics from the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA), in March 2025, 1,469 tons of star anise from Vietnam was exported. The export turnover reached to $5.1 million, a sharp increase of 102.9% compared to the previous month. India was the largest export market, importing 1,111 tons, an increase of nearly 5% compared to February 2025.

In the first three months of 2025, Vietnam exported a total of 3,495 tons of star anise. Accordingly, the total export turnover of star anise from Vietnam reached 12.2 million USD, an increase of 57.3% in volume and 2.2% in value compared to the same period last year.
Star anise has many medicinal properties, such as treating colds, relieving pain, and preventing infections. In addition, it is an important ingredient to enhance the flavor of dishes, especially Phở. Thanks to its many beneficial uses, Vietnamese star anise is highly popular for consumers around the world. As a result, in addition to domestic consumption, it reached to many countries.

In particular, Vietnam’s star anise has reached many countries including India, EU and the US. Besides direct exports to international partners, Vietnam’s star anise is also popular through global e-commerce platforms. In recent years, India and China have emerged as Vietnam’s two primary export markets for star anise. These two markets have accounted for an average market share of approximately 50% and 25%, respectively.
India is one of the world’s largest consumers of star anise and cinnamon from Vietnam. Especially, India is a major producer of medicinal herbs. Currently, Vietnam dominates the Indian market for cinnamon and star anise, holding over 80% market share.

In terms of market potential with a large population, India is an attractive and promising destination for Vietnamese price exporters. Consumer spending in India will rise from the current 1.5 trillion USD to nearly 6 trillion USD by 2030. As a result, it will create significant opportunities for Vietnamese products, especially in the agricultural and spice sectors.
Vietnam is currently one of the world’s leading spice suppliers. Vietnam ranks first globally in the production and export of cinnamon, and second in star anise exports. In addition, other spices such as chili, cloves, ginger, cardamom, and nutmeg also hold significant positions in the international market.
