Lai Chau province is one of the few provinces, which has suitable climate and soil conditions for Vietnam’s passion fruit. Passion fruit has brought stable income and helped farmers in Lai Chau improve their livelihoods and reduce poverty.
The success of the linkages between local people and companies has formed commercial‑oriented passion fruit production zones. As a result, it will open a new path to prosperity for many ethnic minority households in the highlands.
“Seeing people in the village plantiing, my family also took out a loan to buy seeds to grow it. We have been encouraging families to convert low‑income rice paddies into other crops, especially passion fruit”. This was the share from Giang A Chao, a local official, about this new crop in their village.

Vietnam’s passion fruit
Though only introduced recently, Vietnam’s passion fruit has gradually affirmed its important role in the crop structure transformation. Passion fruit trees have easy cultivation, good adaptation to the high‑mountain climate, and long harvesting period. Therefore, they help increase yield and economic efficiency. Also, they help reduce dependence on traditional low‑value crops in the area.
Ms. Hanh’s family is one of the five households participating in the first linkage model of passion fruit. With a cultivatioon area of 3,000 m², after two years of harvests the crop yields over 100 million VND/year. Seeing the economic benefit from passion fruit, her family has converted all her inefficient land into passion fruit cultivation.
Ms. Hanh shared that passion fruit trees were easy to take care and offered long harvesting period. They were the reasons that she rented more land from local villagers to plant passion fruit. She only had a few thousand square meters at first, but now she has over 40 hectares of passion fruit. Moreover, the establishment of a cooperative has made the production linkage among farmers more sustainable.
“This year my family planted over 10 hectares more and now we’ve registered nearly 13 hectares. Experience has shown Vietnamese passion fruit grows easily. You build the trellis once but harvest for many years. Mature trees generate harvest time from April to June, some households harvest until December. Therefore, it is possible to say nearly year‑round harvest,” she said.

Vietnam’s passion fruit will bear fruit continuously for three to four years. The average yield reaches more than 30 tons tons per hectare per year. Thanks to effective production linkages, passion fruits are fully purchased by companies. As a result, it has becomee a key crop contributing to local achievements.
“Businesses fulfill all contents of the linkage with production groups during implementation. They include supplying seeds, fertilizers, pesticides, providing technical support and buying products from farmers. Since early 2024, passion fruit prices have been good. Therefore, our company plans to purchase at prices even better than the market prices,” said Mr. Hung, Director of an export company of passion fruit in Vietnam.
In 2019, Tam Duong district officially began experimental planting of Vietnam’s passion fruit. From an initial 5 hectares, the area has now developed to more than 400 hectares. According to experts, passion fruit is well suited to local climate and soil: it grows well, yields large fruit with thick rind, firm texture, and uniform color.
Mr. Quan, a district official, said that although passion fruit is newly introduced, it has clearly shown economic effectiveness with stable income. According to multidimensional poverty survey data, in late 2021, there were about 32% of poor households. The rate of poor households has now fallen to less than 12%.
“Currently passion fruit price in the area is quite stable and new planting area increases each year. Notable, many households have registered to grow it. So far passion fruit has brought certain results. Then, it contributed to increasing incomes for households and reducing poverty in the district,” said Mr. Quan.
