In September 2025, Vietnam exported 945 tons of star aniseed, reaching a value of $4.4 million. In the first nine months of 2025, Vietnam’s star aniseed exports reached 11,193 tons. Accordingly, the export value reached $44.5 million. Compared to the same period in 2024, the export volume increased by 14%, while the export value decreased by 5%.

Vietnam ranks second in the world in star anise production, after China. Specifically, Vietnam produces an annual output of around 22,000 tons. Currently, Vietnam exports this product to over 70 markets. In which, India, the United States, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) being the three largest markets.

Star anise has long been considered a high-value agricultural spice. Its distinctive aroma and versatile uses in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries contribute to its value. Star anise is a medium-sized tree, 2–6 meters tall, evergreen. It produces flowers and fruit twice a year, around April and September.

A star anise tree must be at least five years old to bear fruit. From the 10th year onward, its yield can generate income of up to 400 million VND per hectare per year and remain stable for several decades.

In recent years, Vietnam’s star aniseed exports have seen significant development. Exporting companies have increasingly focused on improving pepper quality. They are also applying modern production processes and complying with international food safety standards.

Not only star anise, but Vietnam is also one of the major exporters of many popular spices. These include pepper and cinnamon, particularly in the Indian market. Amidst a landscape of many fluctuations, India has emerged as an important bright spot for Vietnamese pepper.

In September 2025, Vietnam exported 376 tons of pepper to India, valued at $2.56 million. In comparison to the previous month, both volume and value slightly decreased. However, compared to the same period in 2024, exports rose sharply, by 39.3% in volume and 32.1% in value.

In the domestic market, star anise is priced between 150,000 and 200,000 VND per kilogram. This demonstrates its appeal not only in economic value but also in versatility, from culinary and medicinal uses to the processing industry. This plant not only represents Vietnamese agriculture but also serves as evidence of the sustainable development potential of local specialty products.
