
In the first five months of 2025, China imported more than 2.3 million tons of cassava starch. Notably, Vietnam’s cassava starch dominated the Chinese market with a major market share.
Specifically, China imported 2.35 million tons of cassava starch, valued at $871.07 million. These figures showed an increase of 50.2% in volume and 3.6% in value compared to the same period in 2024. Despite the sharp increase in import volume, the total value saw only a slight rise due to a significant drop in import prices.

Vietnam’s cassava starch
During this period, the average import price of cassava starch into China stood at $370.7 per ton. It went down 31% compared to the same period in 2024.
Vietnam was the largest supplier of cassava starch for the Chinese market. The export value reached over 1.14 million tons, accounting for 48.84% of China’s total tapioca starch imports during the period. Compared to the same period last year, imports of Vietnam’s cassava starch rose by 99% year-on-year.
The import value from Vietnam also increased by 36.1% year-on-year, to $409 million. The average import price was $357.2 per ton, down 31.6% year-on-year.

Vietnam’s cassava chips
Thailand was China’s second-largest supplier, with 806,261 tons valued at $322.2 million. It went up 13.3% in volume but down 19% in value compared to the same period. The average import price fell by 28.5% year-on-year to $399.7 per ton.
Imports from Laos reached 351,976 tons, valued at $123.2 million. They went up 52.9% year-on-year in volume and 4.6% year-on-year in value. The average import price was $350.3 per ton, down 31.6% year-on-year.

Vietnam’s cassava starch factory
In the first five months of 2025, China’s total imports of cassava products reached 4.97 million tons, valued at $1.38 billion. This represents a 79.7% increase in volume and a 19.5% increase in value compared to the same period last year.
During this period, the average import price dropped sharply by 33.5% compared to the same period in 2024, down to $277.7 per ton.
