Star anise has experienced a long cultivation history in the province for many years. Moreover, it remains one of its key cash crops, generating significant economic value. In recent years, Lang Son province has focused on maintaining and expanding star anise exports from Vietnam. It has also promoted primary processing and value-added processing to enhance the product’s value.

According to official statistics, Lang Son province is home to more than 46,000 hectares of Vietnamese star anise. This accounts for over 70% of Vietnam’s total cultivation area. Production is available in several communes, including Yen Phuc, Diem He, and Bang Mac. Annual output of dried star anise ranges from 10,000 to 16,000 tonnes. This generates an estimated VND 1.7 trillion (approximately USD 65 million) in economic value each year.

To enhance product value and diversify star anise exports from Vietnam, several Vietnamese spice businesses have proactively invested in machinery and technology. These investments support primary processing and value-added manufacturing.

Ms. Pham Thi Giang is the Director of a Vietnamese spice company, based in Nhan Ly Commune. She said the company focused on exporting dried star anise and producing a limited range of star anise products. To secure a stable supply of high-quality raw materials, the company has partnered with local farmers to source organically grown star anise. The raw materials come from a 40-hectare production area in Bang Mac Commune.

In addition to exporting raw star anise and producing star anise essential oil, the company has spent the past three years expanding into value-added processing. It now manufactures and markets 20 star anise exports from Vietnam. These products are sold domestically and distributed through highway service stations in provinces such as Lao Cai, Vinh Phuc, and Bac Ninh.

In addition to this company, the province is now home to three enterprises, 14 cooperatives, and 17 household businesses. Numerous individual producers are also engaged in the primary processing and deep processing of star anise. Their products include packaged dried star anise for export and star anise essential oil. They also produce soap, laundry detergent, dishwashing liquid, and other products scented with star anise.

Diem He is one of the province’s major star anise-growing areas, with more than 780 hectares under cultivation. The area produces over 1,000 tonnes of fresh star anise annually. Nguyen Thi Quynh is the Head of the Economic Division of Diem He Commune. She said local households have invested in processing facilities, warehouses, and drying kilns. These facilities help convert fresh star anise into dried products that meet export requirements.

More than 100 households in the commune are engaged in purchasing and processing star anise exports from Vietnam. They produce around 1,500 to 2,000 tonnes of dried star anise annually. Their products are marketed nationwide and exported to countries including China and India. Several households have also begun producing star anise essential oil for the domestic market.

Alongside the efforts of businesses and traders to expand processing activities, provincial authorities have continued to develop concentrated star anise cultivation areas. They have also encouraged farmers to adopt organic farming practices to improve productivity and product quality.

The province currently has more than 700 hectares of certified organic star anise plantations. At the same time, authorities have stepped up investment promotion efforts. They have attracted interest from several investors seeking to build star anise processing plants to further increase the value of the province’s signature crop.

Hoang Van Chieu is the Deputy Director of the provincial Department of Agriculture and Environment. He said star anise is one of the province’s flagship agricultural products. Improving product quality, expanding value-added processing, and diversifying product offerings have helped increase the crop’s economic value.

They have also laid the foundation for sustainable development. Going forward, the department will continue supporting businesses and cooperatives by standardizing production processes and strengthening market linkages. It will also help expand market access for Lang Son’s star anise products.
