In recent years, many farming households in Hang Trùng 1 Village (Vân Hồ Commune, Vân Hồ District, Sơn La Province) have shifted their crop production to Vietnamese off-season cabbage cultivation. This transition has initially brought farmers higher and more stable incomes. Especially, some households have even escaped poverty and built spacious, modern homes.
Mr. Hà Văn Huệ is a famer in Hang Trùng 1 Village (Vân Hồ Commune, Vân Hồ District, Sơn La Province). Previously, his family mainly grew maize on upland fields. Despite the hard work, significant labor, and investment required for cultivation and care, the harvests often brought little profit.
As life became increasingly difficult and poverty placed a heavy burden on the family, Mr. Huệ decided to seek temporary jobs at many farms and orchards in Mộc Châu District, Sơn La Province. His goal was to earn money and support his family.
While searching for a way to raise livestock or grow crops that could generate higher economic returns and help him avoid relying on hired labor, Mr. Huệ was still struggling to find the right direction.
Vietnamese off-season cabbage
By chance, during visits to wholesale markets and district markets, he noticed that Vietnam’s cabbage was widely sold everywhere and attracted many buyers. Mr. Huệ then decided to use “all the money he had saved during his years of working as a hired laborer” to invest in growing vegetables under clean production standards. He aimed to supply them to the market.
At first, Mr. Huệ converted 4,000 square meters of rice fields into vegetable production, growing various types of Vietnamese off-season cabbage while simultaneously searching for stable markets. Unexpectedly, vegetables proved highly suitable for the local climate and soil conditions. Rows of lush green cabbages thrived in the fields.
The first cabbage crop generated profits twice as high as his previous maize cultivation. Among the vegetables grown, Vietnamese off-season cabbage sold the best. To meet consumer demand while reducing labor requirements, Mr. Huệ decided to focus on cabbage as his main crop.
Putting his plan into action, Mr. Huệ expanded his cabbage-growing area to 1.5 hectares. During cultivation, he applied scientific and technical methods. These practices allowed his cabbage fields to remain green and vigorous throughout the growing season.
Mr. Hà Văn Huệ said: “Growing Vietnamese round cabbage is quite simple and not as complicated or difficult as raising livestock and poultry. Before sowing cabbage seeds, I usually soak them in warm water at around 50°C for about 21 minutes. After sowing, I cover the soil with a layer of straw about 2 centimeters thick. I then water thoroughly with a watering can twice a day.”
Vietnamese off-season cabbage farms
“When the seeds sprout and emerge above the soil surface, I begin watering with an automatic irrigation system. When the cabbage plants reach about 8 cm in height, I thin out weaker plants to maintain a spacing of around 4 cm.
After each thinning, I apply additional fertilizer using well-composted manure and NPK fertilizer. I do not use nitrogen fertilizer, so my green cabbage garden rarely suffers from stunted growth or pest problems.
During the cabbage-growing process, I avoid using plant protection chemicals and chemical pesticides. As a result, many Vietnamese cabbage exporters from the district and other provinces have come to purchase my produce,” Mr. Huệ said.
Thanks to proper cultivation techniques, the productivity and quality of Mr. Huệ’s cabbage have continued to improve. In 2019, his family harvested more than 25 tons of Vietnamese off-season cabbage. The average selling price ranged from VND 9,000 to VND 11,000 per kilogram. After deducting production costs, they earned a profit of VND 130 million.
Mr. Huệ said: “This year, favorable weather conditions have helped my vegetable garden grow well, while ensuring good product quality. I estimate that the harvest will exceed 30 tons, generating an income of around VND 150 million.”
Vietnamese off-season cabbage exports
Not only has he improved his family’s financial situation, but Mr. Huệ has also shared his cabbage-growing experience with other villagers. This has helped them develop their household economies and strive for better living standards. Since switching to Vietnamese off-season cabbage cultivation, Mr. Huệ has built a spacious house equipped with modern amenities.
Talking with us, Mr. Huệ happily said: “Everything we have today comes from growing Vietnamese cabbage. I never thought that vegetable farming could bring such a high income for my family.”
