2026 Vietnamese fresh lychee Harvest: Lower output and record-high prices

In 2026, Bac Ninh Province’s lychee harvest recorded a sharp decline in output compared with 2025. However, fruit quality improved significantly, and the average selling price reached the highest level on record. The domestic market continued to expand, while exports remained stable in traditional markets. They also gradually increased in high-value markets.

Bac Ninh Province maintained 29,800 hectares of concentrated lychee cultivation, the largest lychee-growing area in Vietnam. This included 8,200 hectares of early-season lychees and 21,600 hectares of main-season lychees. Of the total area, 17,500 hectares were certified under VietGAP. Meanwhile, 1,400 hectares met GlobalGAP standards.

The main lychee harvest season lasted from May 15 to July 20. This year, the province strengthened the management of growing area codes. It registered 243 codes covering 17,451 hectares for export. These included 126 codes for China (16,176 hectares), 21 for the United States, 29 for Australia, 25 for Thailand, and 40 for Japan.

The province also had 42 export-qualified packing facilities.

For the first time, Bac Ninh launched the “Beautiful Lychee Orchard” program, recognizing 143 orchards. The initiative integrated orchards with Google Maps and organized a competition. It honored 15 outstanding orchards while combining agricultural production with experiential tourism.

According to the province’s 2026 report, total revenue from lychees and related supporting services was estimated at more than VND 9 trillion. Of this, lychee sales generated over VND 7.26 trillion, while supporting activities and services contributed more than VND 1.74 trillion. The average selling price of fresh lychees exceeded VND 55,000 per kilogram.

Fresh fruit accounted for the majority of lychee consumption. The remaining output was processed into canned lychees, dried lychees, frozen lychees, and other value-added products. All of these were marketed successfully.

Production management was implemented systematically from an early stage. The Bac Ninh Provincial People’s Committee established a steering committee and specialized task forces. These had clearly assigned responsibilities for production, trade promotion, logistics, quality management, and communications.

The Department of Industry and Trade led a wide range of trade promotion activities. It organized a market assessment conference and signing ceremony on April 28. This was followed by the Lychee and Key Agricultural Products Trade Promotion Conference on May 28, which brought together Vietnamese trade offices, Chinese border authorities, supermarket chains, and logistics companies.

The Department of Industry and Trade organized four livestream sales events directly from lychee-growing areas in collaboration with TikTok Shop and Viettel Post. These events attracted millions of views. They also helped deliver hundreds of metric tons of lychees and OCOP products to consumers.

The province also established the Key Opinion Leaders (KOL) Club and the Key Opinion Consumers (KOC) Club for lychee products. The initiative aimed to strengthen digital marketing and consumer engagement.

At the same time, Bac Ninh invested in logistics infrastructure, with the Bac Ninh International Logistics Center providing multimodal transport connections, cold storage, chilled warehousing, customs services, and a wholesale export agricultural products hub. These facilities helped accelerate customs clearance. They also improved the storage and preservation of fresh lychees.

In 2027, the province will continue expanding the area certified under VietGAP, GlobalGAP, and organic standards. It will also strengthen the management of growing area codes and packing facilities. Meanwhile, it will promote value chain linkages, technological innovation, and digital transformation in trade promotion.

The province will further leverage the Bac Ninh International Logistics Center to optimize transportation and cold-chain storage. It will also expand access to premium markets. The province also plans to integrate lychee production with ecotourism. In addition, it will support investment in deep processing to enhance the long-term competitiveness of lychee growers.

The province’s overarching goal remains unchanged: to make quality the foundation, market demand the guiding principle, and farmers’ economic benefits the central focus.
