Đường Hồng ginger has met all the requirements for export to the United States after successfully passing rigorous inspections. This achievement is the result of coordinated production, strict compliance with organic farming standards, and the transformation of the cooperative model in Tuyen Quang Province.
According to Tuyen Quang Newspaper, the story of Phan Van Quang’s family in Tham Quang Village, Duong Hong Commune, Tuyen Quang Province, is a typical example. At the beginning of 2025, Quang planted 1 hectare of ginger on a trial basis. By following the guidance of agricultural engineers, he harvested 18 metric tons of ginger rhizomes after 10 months.
The entire harvest was purchased directly by Son Y Cooperative at VND 10,000 per kilogram. After deducting the costs of seedlings and fertilizers, Quang’s family earned a profit of VND 120 million.
However, Son Y Cooperative’s ambitions extend beyond the domestic market. According to Nguyen Thi Hong Lieu, Director of the cooperative, “After successfully passing rigorous inspections, Duong Hong ginger has met all the requirements for export to the United States.”
To maintain this achievement, the cooperative expanded its production linkage area to 50 hectares in 2026. It also required all participating farmers to fully comply with 100% organic cultivation practices. Although initial investment costs are higher, each hectare of certified organic ginger can generate VND 350–400 million in revenue.
Growing market demand, together with the initiative of farmer-entrepreneurs, has gradually given rise to a new generation of cooperatives. These organizations not only supply production inputs but also process products. They coordinate production and secure markets for farmers.
Unlike the administrative and largely symbolic cooperatives of the past, modern cooperatives work closely with their members. They provide certified agricultural inputs, technical training, supervise compliance with VietGAP and OCOP standards, and, most importantly, ensure stable market access.
Commenting on this transformation, Cao Hung Dung, Chairman of the Tuyen Quang Cooperative Alliance, said: “The greatest achievement of the collective economy today is not the number of cooperative models, but the change in people’s mindset. Farmers now understand how to calculate production costs and follow standardized farming practices. They also recognize that long-term success depends on working together.”
To date, Tuyen Quang Province has 1,649 cooperatives with a combined registered capital of more than VND 4.64 trillion. Of these, approximately 200–250 agricultural cooperatives participate in production and marketing linkages. They account for more than 50% of the province’s agricultural cooperatives that engage in cooperative production models and guaranteed purchasing agreements for members and local farmers.
The cooperative sector has also established itself as a driving force in developing the province’s signature agricultural products. Nearly 220 cooperatives participate in the OCOP (One Commune One Product) program out of 334 registered participants. This represents almost 65% of all OCOP entities. Together, they have developed 294 products rated three stars or higher. In addition, 57 cooperatives have adopted VietGAP or organic standards. Meanwhile, 135 cooperatives have registered trademarks covering 146 products, reflecting an increasingly professional, market-oriented approach to agricultural production.
Building sustainable agricultural value chains has never been easy, especially as international markets continue to impose stricter requirements. However, the experience of Tuyen Quang Province demonstrates that when farmers embrace change and work closely with cooperatives and local authorities, local agricultural products can confidently strengthen their market position. They can also expand into international markets.
