This year’s shallot season, farmers in Vạn Tường Commune, Quảng Ngãi Province, are enjoying a successful harvest. Yields have reached a record high, and selling prices have increased significantly compared with the same period last year.
The combination of favorable weather conditions and a shift in farming practices toward safer and more sustainable production has strengthened the role of shallots as a key crop. It has also opened up new prospects for coastal agriculture in the locality.
These days, production activities in Vạn Tường Commune have become extremely bustling. Across the fields, farmers are rushing to harvest the shallot crop with great excitement as the crop has delivered outstanding yields this year. Farming has also become more favorable thanks to low rainfall and mild weather throughout the plants’ growing period. As a result, shallots have developed evenly, producing large, firm bulbs with attractive appearances that meet the increasingly strict requirements of today’s agricultural markets.
Võ Ngọc Bé, who has spent more than 30 years growing shallots, said that in the past, local farmers mainly cultivated the crop on a small scale. They only planted a few sao of land to supplement their incomes. However, since 2017, as the economic value of shallots has become increasingly recognized, the crop has developed into a key agricultural product of the locality. He said that each sao of shallots this year produced around 1 ton. At the current selling price, farmers can earn a minimum profit of about VND 15 million per sao after deducting production costs.
Thái Văn Xu’s family planted three sao of shallots during this crop season. After 55 days of cultivation and care, their field produced around 3 tons of bulbs, which were purchased by traders at VND 37,000 per kilogram. Xu said that from the initial 300 kilograms of seeds, his family harvested approximately 3 tons of shallots. After deducting costs, they earned a profit of more than VND 70 million, bringing great excitement to the family. According to him, many households in the area achieved an average yield of 1.3–1.4 tons of shallots per 100 kilograms of seeds. Some households even reached up to 1.5 tons.
The success of this year’s shallot crop has not only generated a significant increase in farmers’ incomes. It has also eased concerns over the common problem of bumper harvests leading to low prices in previous years. While uneven yields among fields were quite common in the past, this year more than 90% of cultivated areas achieved high productivity. This success has not only improved farmers’ livelihoods but also encouraged them to remain committed to the profession, contributing to the stronger position of local agricultural products in the market.
In addition to the impressive yield results, this year’s shallot crop has also marked a significant shift in the production mindset of farmers in Vạn Tường. Instead of relying entirely on traditional farming experience, growers have proactively adopted new techniques. They are prioritizing the use of organic fertilizers, cow manure, and biological pesticides to gradually replace chemical fertilizers. This safe and sustainable farming approach has not only helped shallot plants grow more stably. It has also significantly improved product quality, laying a solid foundation for building a local brand.
Đỗ Biên Nhất, Director of Bình Hải Agricultural Cooperative, said that shallot prices rose sharply this year. This was because supplies from many growing areas had not yet entered the harvest season while market demand remained high. This factor helped shallot growers achieve a successful season in both productivity and economic value. Purchasing traders also confirmed that Vạn Tường shallots achieved high quality this year, with uniform, firm bulbs and attractive colors. These characteristics have made the product favored by consumers and helped maintain stable demand in many provinces and cities.
Vũ Thị Kiều Vân, Head of the Economic Division of Vạn Tường Commune, said that the commune planted around 120 hectares of shallots this season. Thanks to favorable weather conditions and limited pest outbreaks, the crop developed well. Average yields reached about 1 ton per sao depending on the harvest period. Total output for the season is estimated at approximately 2,400 tons. With shallot prices remaining high, revenue from this crop is expected to reach around VND 72 billion, creating positive signals for the local agricultural economy.
Lữ Thế Lâm, Vice Chairman of the Vạn Tường Commune People’s Committee, said that in the coming period, the locality will orient shallot development toward organic production and deeper processing. These efforts aim to increase added value and diversify market outlets. The commune also plans to connect shallot-growing areas with the Gành Yến tourist destination to develop community-based tourism. This will create additional livelihoods for local residents. In addition, Lâm said the locality will continue promoting the role of Bình Hải Agricultural Cooperative in linking product collection and distribution.
With the goal of building a strong brand, comprehensive solutions from production to consumption are expected to help Bình Hải shallots maintain their market position. These measures will also bring long-term prosperity to farmers. The achievements from this successful crop season will serve as a solid foundation for coastal agriculture in Quảng Ngãi to continue transforming toward sustainable development, increasing incomes, and improving the livelihoods of hundreds of households directly involved in cultivation in this promising specialized farming area.
