
During the Covid-19 pandemic, several types of Vietnamese fruits have successfully entered the Australian market for the first time. In which, frozen dracontomelon from Vietnam stood out as a notable highlight. This brought great joy and motivation to local farmers.
According to the Vietnam Trade Office in Australia, for the first time, a large shipment of frozen dracontomelon from Vietnam (22 tons) has entered into Australia. The retail price started at AUD 18 per kilogram. Therefore, the total value of this shipment could exceed AUD 390,000 (equivalent to over VND 6.5 billion).

The harvest season of Vietnamese dracontomelon lasts from June to September. The export revenue potential of frozen dracontomelon from Vietnam is considered on par with other fruits currently being exported to the Australian market.
The Trade Office have assessed export potential, market demand, production areas, and regional specialties for export. Then, it finally decided to promote Vietnam’s frozen dracontomelon in this market.

As part of the promotional campaign, the Trade Office allocated budget for advertising on social media platforms in key consumption areas. Also, it coordinated with local businesses to launch promotional programs, including a prize giveaway of 10 gift sets featuring Vietnamese bird’s nest products for customers who purchase dracontomelon. In addition, it made efforts to gradually introduce the product into major distribution systems.
Moreover, the Trade Office is preparing to release an English-language dracontomelon recipe book to market frozen dracontomelon from Vietnam. The Trade Office maintains a consistent policy of supporting and promoting the export of branded Vietnamese agricultural products that are competitive in terms of quality and packaging.

In the first half of 2021, there are many social distancing measures in many cities and logistical challenges for export. However, Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable exports to Australia grew by a record 52% compared to the same period in 2019, reaching over $40 million.
When including other major agricultural exports such as cashew nuts, black pepper, coffee, and rice, total agricultural exports to Australia in the first six months of 2021 amounted to nearly $110 million.
