Developing Vietnam’s high-quality cabbage area for export

Recently, Ha Nam province has collaborated with Department of Science and Technology, implemented a project. Specifically, the project has name “Developing Vietnam’s high-quality cabbage area that follows Globalgap and Vietgap standards in Ha Nam”.

The project has aimed to promote the application of scientific and technological advances in safe vegetable production. Accordingly, it has been supposed to increase the income of vegetable growers.

The use of organic fertilizers with Trichoderma preparations positively supported the composting process. It helped accelerate the decomposition of organic fertilizers and contribute to improvingsoil quality for more effective crop care. The irrigation systems applied proved highly efficient, helping to save water and reduce labor for irrigation.

To ensure the project’s successful implementation of Vietnam’s high-quality cabbage project, Ha Nam organized training courses for 150 agricultural technicians, local extension officers, and participating farmers. In addition, the province organized scientific seminars and networking events between buyers and producers.

In line with the project’s goals, the model applied synchronized scientific and technical advances. At each project site, technological processes were transferred and adopted. Farmers used solarization across the entire project area for soil treatment.

Also, they composted 200 tons of organic fertilizer using Trichoderma preparations, yielding about 120 tons of fully decomposed organic fertilizer. In addition, they installed and operating irrigation systems for 3,000 m² at each site.

Each one-hectare site used nylon-covered tunnels and 4,000 m² of non-woven fabric. Moreover, the province established organizational links for safe vegetable production and consumption under Vietgap standards.

Ha Nam province conducted surveys and actual production conditions. Then, experts selected five locations in the districts of Binh Luc, Ly Nhan, and Kim Bang for implementation. During the project’s period, they conducted 22 technical training sessions for farmers.

The most successful component was the cabbage production model following Globalgap standards from Duc Huy Service Cooperative. They cultivated on an area of 5 hectares, using the No. 70 cabbage variety.

Accordingly, the model selected a certification and assessment agency to issue Globalgap certificates for cabbage. It included consulting on production status, risk assessment and mitigation. Also, it included rigorous evaluations of farm history, waste recycling and reuse, pollutant control, and product sampling for quality analysis.

As a result, the project met the criteria and received Globalgap certification for cabbage, valid from December 9, 2019, to December 8, 2020.

Throughout the production process, the model strictly followed technical procedures. Farmers used the No. 70 cabbage variety which was high in nutritional value, crisp in texture. In addition, it had strong growth and resistance characteristics. This variety matched Japanese consumer preferences and was purchased by enterprises for export to Japan.

Globalgap assessment and certification organization closely supervised the cultivation model. Also, highly rated for cabbage growth and development. The plants had thick, healthy leaves, well-developed root systems, good pest resistance, and an average yield of 43 tons/ha.

Through the implementation of the Globalgap-standard cabbage production model linked to export, farmers at the production sites were very enthusiastic and felt confident in investing. They exposed to scientific, suitable production methods and strictly adhered to technical processes to produce quality products, gradually aligning with market-oriented agricultural production.

This serves as a catalyst for land consolidation to develop high-quality cabbages in the coming years.
