Due to limited supply, Vietnamese chili prices continue to remain high

Vietnamese chili prices

Recently, due to the impact of weather conditions, Vietnamese chili prices in the province have reached record highs. Although prices have slightly decreased, they remain at very high levels.

According to reports, at this time, the price of chili in Đồng Tháp province is around 100,000 VND/kg, purchased by traders. However, the supply of chili remains very limited.

Mrs. Dương Thị Kim Nga’s family (Kinh Trên Hamlet, Tân Điền Commune, Đồng Tháp Province) grows 2.2 công of chili (approximately 0.22 hectares). When we visited, she and her workers were busy harvesting chili to sell to traders. According to Mrs. Nga, her chili garden reached the harvest stage about two weeks ago. So far, she has harvested seven times, averaging once every two days.

Mrs. Nga happily said, “This season, my family planted the Sen Hồng chili variety. This variety produces beautiful fruits, has high yields, and is resistant to disease. During the early harvests, the yield was small, but in recent harvests, each picking brought in about 10 million VND. I have already recovered my investment, so from now on it’s all profit. During the first harvests, Vietnamese chili prices reached 120,000 VND/kg, but now it has dropped to around 100,000 VND/kg. At this price, farmers are still making a good profit.”

Mrs. Nguyễn Thị Hạnh’s family (Gò Táo Hamlet, Tân Đông Commune, Đồng Tháp Province) grows over 1 công of chili (approximately 0.1 hectare). Her chili garden has been in harvest for 10 days.

Mrs. Hạnh shared, “A few days ago, chili sold for 110,000 VND/kg, now it’s around 100,000 VND/kg. I have never sold chili at this price before. At this level, my family is making a good profit this year. The chili garden will continue to be harvested until after Tet, so we hope prices will remain high.”

With Vietnamesechili prices at the farm reaching very high levels, retail prices at markets have also “peaked.” Mrs. Trần Mỹ Duyên, a vegetable trader in Mỹ Phong Ward, Đồng Tháp Province, said that she currently buys chili at 180,000 VND/kg for resale. Due to the high price, it is very difficult to sell.

Mr. Cao Đình Tuấn, Director of Sen Hồng Crop Variety Co., Ltd. (Đạo Thạnh Ward, Đồng Tháp Province), stated that the record-high chili prices are due to limited supply. Storms and heavy rains in the central and northern provinces have caused significant damage to agricultural production, affecting the supply of vegetables, including chili. In addition, the chili harvest in the southern provinces is nearly over.

Currently, chili prices in the central and northern provinces range from 90,000 to 100,000 VND/kg, while in the Mekong Delta, Vietnamese chili prices are around 90,000 VND/kg. The supply of chili in Đồng Tháp Province remains limited.
