With more than 202,000 hectares of coconut plantations and an annual output exceeding 2.28 million metric tons, Vietnam currently ranks as the world’s fifth-largest coconut exporter. China’s recent approval of additional growing area codes marks an important milestone. Far more than a customs requirement, growing area codes have become a true “passport.” They are a strategic tool that facilitates exports and helps elevate the Vietnamese coconut brand in global markets.
In international trade, trust is the most valuable currency. In the agricultural sector, that trust is built on transparency and compliance with quality standards. At its core, a growing area code is a mechanism that certifies and validates that trust. The recent approval by the General Administration of Customs of China (GACC) of six new growing area and packing facility codes for An Giang Province (including the merged areas of An Giang and Kien Giang) clearly reflects this trend. It is not a privilege, but the result of sustained efforts to meet stringent import requirements.
Obtaining this “passport” requires producers and exporters to commit to a tightly controlled production process. According to Nguyen Van Hien, Director of the Sub-Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection of An Giang, strict monitoring of pesticide residues, effective pest management, and compliance with technical standards are mandatory. These are not merely regulatory requirements. They represent a commitment to delivering clean and safe agricultural products to consumers. In addition, all certified growing areas must publicly disclose production information and regularly update electronic production records in the national database. As a result, every coconut exported from a registered growing area carries a clear “identity card.” This enables full traceability back to its origin.
At a time when 225 countries and territories import coconuts, while only 179 countries are capable of exporting them, quality and reliability have become the decisive competitive advantages. For importers in markets such as the United States and the European Union, a certified growing area code represents far more than market access. It signals a trustworthy business partner and a responsible supply chain. Brand reputation is built on these rigorous technical standards. They enable Vietnamese coconuts to move beyond the perception of being low-cost, inconsistent products. They also help establish them in higher-value market segments where quality, transparency, and traceability are the defining attributes.
Meeting the requirements for a growing area code is only the first step. Its real strategic value lies in providing a solid foundation to address one of the longstanding weaknesses of Vietnam’s agricultural sector: the export of raw commodities with limited value addition. By exporting only fresh coconuts or dried coconut meat, producers often accept thin profit margins. They also remain highly vulnerable to fluctuations in global commodity prices and struggle to establish a recognizable brand in international markets.
A stable supply of raw materials that meets international standards is the essential prerequisite for businesses to confidently invest in value-added processing. This is where the long-term vision of government agencies and industry associations becomes critical. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, more than 30% of Vietnam’s coconut-growing area is expected to be cultivated under GAP or equivalent standards by 2030. This represents a direct investment in improving the intrinsic quality of Vietnamese coconut products.
This vision is being translated into practical strategies across the industry.
First, developing OCOP products. The One Commune One Product (OCOP) program provides a pathway for local specialties to evolve into distinctive brands with unique stories, attractive packaging, and reliable quality. It also encourages the development of higher-value products such as virgin coconut oil, organic coconut candy, and coconut-based cosmetics.
Second, building a sustainable coconut ecosystem. As proposed by Nguyen Thi Kim Thanh, Chairwoman of the Vietnam Coconut Association, promoting intercropping and making use of the coconut palm’s ability to retain water and improve soil quality not only enhances farm productivity but also strengthens the industry’s sustainability credentials. This creates a compelling brand narrative centered on environmentally friendly agriculture. It is an attribute that is increasingly valued by consumers worldwide.
Third, integrating tourism with brand development. Expanding ecotourism in coconut-growing regions, together with visits to traditional craft villages and processing facilities, offers a highly effective branding strategy. It transforms coconut products from simple commodities into cultural experiences. Visitors are not merely purchasing a bottle of coconut oil. They are taking home memories of walking through lush coconut groves and witnessing traditional production techniques firsthand. Such experiences create a lasting emotional connection with the brand. This is something that conventional advertising alone cannot easily achieve.
Starting with the establishment of growing area codes, Vietnam’s coconut industry now has a valuable opportunity to build a multi-dimensional national brand strategy. This brand can be anchored in internationally recognized quality standards, enriched by innovative value-added products, and strengthened through distinctive cultural and tourism experiences. In this sense, the growing area code is far more than a “passport” for market access. It enables Vietnamese coconuts to reach global consumers with greater confidence, stronger credibility, and a unique value proposition.
