Hai Duong Province is famous as the “carrot capital” of Vietnam. The average carrot yield here reaches 41.7 tons per hectare. For many years, Hai Duong carrot has been a key agricultural product of the province. They are grown on a large scale with high technology application along the Thai Binh and Kinh Thay rivers.
Carrots from Hai Duong are predominantly cultivated in districts such as Cam Giang, Nam Sach, Chi Linh, and Ninh Giang. Duc Chinh Commune in Cam Giang District produces the largest quantity, earning it the title of the province’s carrot hub.
According to Mr. Tuong, head of Duc Chinh Commune, the carrot harvest is just about a month away. He emphasized that this area produces uniquely delicious carrots, thanks to the local soil and climate. The high economic value of carrots has significantly improved the living standards of farmers here.
Hai Duong’s carrots thrive on the nutrient-rich alluvial deposits of the province’s major rivers combined with favorable weather conditions. This creates carrots with a distinctively sweet and crunchy flavor.
The province maintains approximately 1,400 hectares of carrot cultivation, yielding over 70,000 tons per season. All carrot production areas comply with safety standards to serve domestic consumption and export markets. Planting takes place from early September to early October, with harvesting concentrated from January to March annually.
There are more than 70% of Hai Duong’s carrot output is for export. The main markets are the Middle East, South Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand. In the meanwhile, the remaining 30% is for local consumption.
Currently, there are around 20 packing houses of fresh carrot here. They specialize in purchasing, processing, and exporting carrots. Each facility can process and package approximately 100 tons of fresh carrots daily.
Through various virtual trade promotion events, representatives from Vietnam’s trade offices in UAE, Singapore, Australia, Russia, and other countries have provided valuable insights into market preferences, product standards, trade barriers, and technical requirements. These recommendations aim to help local businesses produce high-quality agricultural products that meet international import standards.
Hai Duong Province has actively promoted its agricultural products, such as lychees and carrots, through trade promotion campaigns. In 2021 and 2022, the provincial government collaborated with the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to organize three major trade promotion events.
These activities have had a significant impact both domestically and internationally, involving nearly 300 foreign importers from 18 countries and regions. As a result, they have enhanced the value and reputation of Hai Duong’s agricultural products, particularly carrots and lychees, in both domestic and global markets.
The development of Cam Giang carrot has firmly established their brand. The product was certified as a collective trademark in 2008. It also achieved Vietnam’s golden agriculture brand recognition in 2017.
