Lai Châu tea is gradually asserting its distinct quality identity. From natural advantages to processing techniques, the product is steadily enhancing the value of its highland-origin brand.
Following the issuance of a Geographical Indication (GI) registration certificate in 2025, Lai Châu tea has entered a new phase in its brand-building journey. No longer seen merely as an agricultural commodity, it is a signature product with added value. It has closely associated with local natural conditions and the cultural identity of the highland region.
The geographical indication “Lai Châu” includes green tea, Oolong tea, and Oriental Beauty tea. The raw materials that make these products are high-quality tea buds. They come from ancient Shan tea varieties and the Kim Tuyen cultivar. The establishment of the geographical indication not only helps identify product origin but also provides a basis for ensuring consistent quality control.

Mr. Dương Đình Đức is the Director of the Department of Science and Technology of Lai Châu Province. He stated the issuance of the Geographical Indication Certificate for Lai Châu tea marks a clear affirmation of the product’s quality and origin.
Unique natural conditions and strictly controlled production processes form its distinctive characteristics. This serves not only to protect the product’s reputation. It also creates a foundation for enhancing brand value, expanding markets, and promoting sustainable development for the local tea industry.
From a product perspective, Lai Châu tea demonstrates clear differentiation. The green tea features a natural aroma and a mild astringency. It also has a distinct sweet aftertaste, with glutamic acid content of at least 5.34 g/100 g.
The Oolong tea offers floral aromas, a smooth taste, and light sweetness. Its glutamic acid content is 4.24 g/100 g.
Meanwhile, Oriental Beauty tea carries notes of sugarcane and honey. It has a mellow, almost non-astringent taste, with glutamic acid content reaching 5.61 g/100 g. These indicators reflect product quality and help create a unique identity for Lai Châu tea in the market.

This quality foundation is rooted in specific natural conditions. Shan tea growing areas are located at elevations ranging from 1,200 to 2,500 meters above sea level. They also feature a large day–night temperature variation and an average annual rainfall of around 2,118 mm. The temperature differences help tea plants accumulate amino acids. Adequate rainfall supports the growth of tender, nutrient-rich buds.
For the Kim Tuyen variety, cultivation areas lie at elevations of 900 to 1,300 meters. These areas have favorable climatic conditions for high-quality tea types such as Oolong and Oriental Beauty. Temperature, humidity, and rainfall conditions all contribute to shaping leaf structure and the tea’s distinctive flavor profile.
In addition to natural advantages, production processes also play a crucial role. The selection of raw materials is based on standardized tea buds. Appropriate processing techniques are applied for each product line. This helps preserve distinctive flavors and enhance overall quality. It is a key factor enabling Lai Châu tea to maintain consistency when entering the market.
Practical experience shows that geographical indications are not only legal instruments. They are also tools for economic development. When products are clearly identified, brand value is elevated. This creates more favorable conditions for consumption and market expansion. At the same time, it helps protect producers’ rights and prevent the mixing of products with unclear origins.
However, to fully realize the value of the geographical indication, maintaining consistent quality and strengthening production linkages remain essential requirements. Production must be organized in a more centralized manner and must be strictly controlled.
Against this backdrop, Lai Châu tea has a clear opportunity to elevate its brand positioning. When natural advantages are combined with quality management and systematic branding efforts, the product can move beyond a local specialty. It can reach broader markets.
Building on its existing foundation, developing tea production in a sustainable direction linked with highland values is a suitable pathway forward. This is not only about a single product. It is also about improving incomes and stabilizing livelihoods for local communities. It also helps affirm the position of Lai Châu agricultural products in the market.
