Star anise trees produce fruit twice yearly, with harvesting occurring in July and September. A tree must be at least five years old to bear fruit, making this a rare and valuable spice. Lang Son star anise is a vital ingredient in gastronomy, medicine, and perfumery for its unique aroma and flavor.

Lang Son boasts the largest star aniseed cultivation area in Vietnam. It has more than over 35,000 hectares, which accounts for 70% of the country’s supply. In 2012, they issued geographical indication protection for star aniseed planting in Lang Son province. Under the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), star anise from Lang Son was recognized in the EU’s list of protection. To meet European standards, the product must comply with stringent quality and technical requirements.
