Thanh Hoa province: Developing the Vietnamese green lime cultivation models

Mr. Lam is a local farmer in Hoang Dao commune, Hoang Hoa district, Thanh Hoa province. In 2020, on four hectares of inefficient rice-growing land, his family switched to a Vietnamese green lime cultivation model. He applied new scientific and technical advances in production following safe and organic methods. Therefore, the seedless lime trees have initially brought high economic efficiency.

He said: “To achieve this result, my family had to go through many failed trials from one model to another. When I went to the South to learn, I found it easy to grow and not demanding on soil. Also, Vietnam’s seedless lime also bears fruit all year round, so I decided to invest. The land does not disappoint the effort. Up to now, the model has brought stable income to our family.”

Mr. Lam skillfully applied knowledge he learned along with his own experience to plan the cultivation area. He planted trees in rows with a density of 400 lemon shoots per hectare. Vietnamese green lime starts bearing fruit after 18 months and produce fruit year-round.

On average, the trees only begin to age after over 10 years. Each tree produces over 1,000 fruits, averaging about 50-70 kg per tree per year. The farm gate price ranges from 35,000 to 45,000 VND/kg. Currently, Mr. Lam’s green lime orchard harvests once a month. Its yield reaches 1.2 to 1.5 tons of fruit per month, bringing in over 200 million VND annually.

To ensure the quality of Vietnamese green lime, his family use organic fertilizers and microbial powder. Every three months, he waters organic fertilizer at the tree roots once. This limits the use of chemical fertilizers and increases the plants’ resistance to pests and diseases. It also helps the trees flower and fruit more, improving the quality of agricultural products in a safe direction.

At the same time, Mr. Lam invested in an automatic irrigation system to keep the plants healthy and adequately moist. The irrigation system has many advantages for seedless green lime, such as evenly distributing water and maintaining the necessary moisture around the root area.

It also helps limit weed growth and avoids the risk of clogging during use, which often occurs in drip irrigation systems. Notably, Mr. Lam also combines fertilization through the irrigation system, which helps reduce labor costs for fertilization. This method also enhances fertilizer use efficiency and optimizes productivity.

To sell large quantities, Mr. Lam has connected with traders who come directly to purchase. Also, he signed contracts with a partnered company to buy products, ensuring relatively stable output and prices. In the near future, his family will cooperate with local residents to convert inefficient land areas into seedless lime cultivation.

From his success, it is clear that farmers are becoming increasingly perceptive in switching to suitable crops and improving their income. This also contributes effectively to the implementation of the local agricultural restructuring policy.

In the coming time, Hoang Dao commune will continue to consolidate land plots. Additionally, it creates favorable conditions for households and businesses to invest in seedless lemon cultivation. This will create a concentrated production area for Vietnamese seedless lime following organic practices, aiming for export.
