Thanh Minh Commune owns local soil and climate conditions that are well suitable to Vietnamese exported lemongrass cultivation. Therefore, the commune has been expanding its lemongrass-growing area, helping increase local residents’ incomes.

Thanh Minh Commune comprises 12 villages, where local livelihoods have traditionally depended on agriculture, forestry, and livestock farming. The area’s favorable soil and climate are well suitable to lemongrass cultivation. Therefore, the commune has been expanding its Vietnamese lemongrass planting area. This has created a stable source of income for local residents.

According to local farmers, Vietnamese exported lemongrass adapts well to both hilly land and paddy fields. It is drought-tolerant and highly resistant to pests and diseases. Households have adopted modern technology to extract essential oil from lemongrass leaves. As a result, they no longer rely solely on selling the stalks for income. They also generate revenue from marketing the lemongrass leaves and essential oil.

Vietnamese exported lemongrass can offer harvest just three months after planting. Thereafter, each crop can be harvested every 40 to 50 days. As a result, Vietnam’s lemongrass essential oil can be available continuously throughout the year.

Thanh Minh Commune now has 200 hectares under Vietnamese lemongrass cultivation. The local authorities have also created favorable conditions for businesses to invest in lemongrass essential oil production. The commune is currently home to two processing facilities, which purchase thousands of tons of lemongrass leaves each year. This has provided growers with an additional source of income while reducing the practice of burning discarded leaves after harvest.

Ms. Duong Thi Thu Hien is the Chairwoman of the Board of Members of a Vietnamese vegetable company based in Thanh Minh Commune. She said that the company was established in August 2020. Its goal was to create jobs and boost the local economy through the production of lemongrass essential oil and medicinal herbs grown under forest canopies.

Each day, the company purchases dozens of tons of lemongrass leaves and leaf sheaths from local farmers at stable prices throughout the year. Supportive local policies have enabled the business to expand, while strong backing from local residents has helped create jobs and ensure a reliable market for farmers’ raw materials. The company’s lemongrass essential oil is primarily exported.

The processing facility currently handles 10–12 tons of Vietnamese exported lemongrass per day. To meet growing market demand, the company plans to expand its raw material cultivation area and upgrade its production lines. This expansion of Vietnamese lemongrass cultivation is likely to create more employment opportunities for local residents.

With its favorable natural conditions and stable market demand, lemongrass cultivation in Thanh Minh is likely to continue expanding. It is likely to contribute to higher incomes, poverty reduction, and stronger economic development for local communities.
