Handicraft is one of the strongest export sectors of Vietnam, which is present in all markets from Asia to Europe and America. Through many ups and downs in the process of formation and development, Vietnam handicraft has increasingly affirmed its firm position in the international market.
In fact, the trend of consumers in the world is increasingly towards friendly environmental products and originating from natural materials. That is a huge development opportunity for Vietnam handicraft products, especially when we have the strength in raw materials and traditional craft workers.
According to Vietnam Handicraft Exporters Association (Vietcraft), there are more than 5,400 handicraft villages in Vietnam. According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, traditional handicrafts have always been in the group of 10 largest export items of Vietnam in recent years. Moreover, export turnover of Vietnam handicraft in the period 2015-2019 increased by an average of 9.5% per year, from USD 1.62 billion (2015) to USD 2.23 billion (2019).
The US is the largest consuming market for Vietnamese handicraft products (accounting for 35% of annual export turnover). In addition, other markets such as Japan, the European Union (especially Germany), and Korea buy a lot of handicrafts from Vietnam each year.
The exporting handicrafts from Vietnam mainly include 5 groups:
1. Handbags, wallets, suitcases, hats, and umbrellas
2. Toys, sports equipment and parts
3. Ceramic goods
4. Products of rattan, bamboo, sedge, and carpet
5. Art wood
The implementation of free trade agreements (FTAs) such as: EVFTA, CPTPP, RCEP … is opening up a lot of export opportunities for Vietnamese traditional handicrafts, especially in markets with great consumption in Europe.
Nowadays, there have been more and more world customers pay special attention to Vietnamese handicrafts. Vietnam is also considered to be a country with stable and good quality goods that importers of handicrafts and home decoration in the world can trust and cooperate.
Also, many ceramic, porcelain, lacquer, wooden products, rattan products, textiles, embroidery … of Vietnam are familiar with world consumers to use as interior decoration and gifts. However, Vietnam’s handicraft exports only account for a small part of the whole market volume.
