Vietnamese lotus products have high economic value and potential for tourism development. It is one of the key sectors in Dong Thap province’s Agricultural Restructuring Project.

On 7th May 2024, Dong Thap Province announced the export of its first shipment of 15 tons of frozen lotus roots to Japan. It is an estimate that the province will export eight containers of lotus roots to Japan in 2024, with a total value of 7 billion VND.

The province stated that in addition to fresh and processed lotus seeds, it has processed lotus roots for both domestic and export markets. The province is negotiating with partners in South Korea to prepare for exporting Vietnamese lotus products to this market.

The lotus is a signature product representing Dong Thap Province. In which, lotus is primarily cultivated in districts such as Thap Muoi, Cao Lanh, Chau Thanh and Tan Hong. Notably, Thap Muoi accounts for more than 30% of the province’s lotus cultivation area, equivalent to 525 hectares. According to statistics, lotus farmers in the province earned an average profit of over 28 million VND per hectare.

Currently, Dong Thap province has more than 40 facilities producing Vietnamese lotus products. In addition, the province is focusing on establishing planting area codes for lotus cultivation for export.

Dong Thap aims to develop the lotus industry sustainably, focusing on value chains and creating unique products for domestic and export markets. Lotus-themed tourism and cuisine were among Dong Thap’s first eco-tourism models. They are now being actively promoted and effectively utilized to enhance the province’s appeal.

Mr. Phu, Vice Chairman of Thap Muoi District, stated that the district is leveraging the strengths of lotus cultivation by integrating it with agricultural production and tourism development. As a result, lotus production has moved from selling fresh lotus to deep processing products. Many Vietnamese lotus products have received certifications, such as lotus flower tea and fresh lotus seeds.

According to lotus processing enterprises, market signals for this product are very promising, especially in international markets. Many businesses are expanding raw material regions and improving products to meet both domestic and international preferences. By 2025, the province aims to have more than 1,000 hectares of lotus fields under organic cultivation standards.
