Vietnamese passion fruit has been beneficial from strong export growth, expanding markets, and a high processing rate. These factors are creating a solid foundation for passion fruit to become a billion-dollar agricultural export.
Once considered a crop with relatively modest production scale, passion fruit is emerging as one of Vietnam’s fastest-growing fruit and vegetable products. Rising output, expanding export markets, and the increasingly active participation of processing enterprises are laying the groundwork for the industry. This helps the industry move closer to its goal of joining the ranks of Vietnam’s billion-dollar agricultural exports.

Vietnam is currently among the world’s top 10 producers and exporters of passion fruit. Over the past five years, both production and export value have increased by as much as 300%. As a result, Vietnamese passion fruit has become one of the highest-value products in the country’s fruit and vegetable sector.
This growth momentum has continued into 2026. In April alone, passion fruit export turnover reached nearly USD 29 million. Accordingly, it went up 60% compared with the same period last year. This marked the strongest growth among Vietnam’s top 10 fruit and vegetable export products.
In the first four months of the year, Vietnam’s passion fruit exports exceeded USD 76 million. Accordingly, they showed an increase of nearly 40%. They accounted for 3.73% of the country’s total fruit and vegetable export value.
Vietnam currently has more than 12,000 hectares dedicated to passion fruit cultivation, with annual output of around 200,000 tons. Thanks to its ability to produce up to three harvests per year, the crop is generating high economic returns for many localities. This is particularly evident in the Central Highlands region.
Unlike many fruits that depend heavily on fresh consumption, passion fruit benefits from its extensive integration into the food processing industry. At present, around 80% of total production is purchased by Vietnamese fruit enterprises for processing or export. This provides growers with a relatively stable market outlet.

Products such as juice, syrup, concentrated passion fruit, and ingredients used in beverages, confectionery, and ice cream are increasingly popular in international markets. Steady demand from the European Union (EU), together with the official export of Vietnamese passion fruit to China, is creating additional room for the industry’s expansion.
One notable feature of the sector is the involvement of businesses across the entire value chain, from varietal research and raw material area development to processing and export. To date, Vietnam has officially approved 43 passion fruit varieties for commercial cultivation. These varieties serve both fresh-fruit exports and processing needs.
The Central Highlands remains the country’s key production region, accounting for more than 86% of total cultivation area and about 92.5% of national output. Meanwhile, the provinces of Nghe An and Son La are also expanding their cultivation areas to meet growing market demand.
