Accumulated over the first 10 months of 2024, Vietnamese star anise exports reached 11,152 tons. The export turnover was worth at $52.6 million, a decrease of 13.3% compared to the same period last year.

According to the Vietnam Pepper and Spices Association, Vietnam exported 1,330 tons of star anise in October 2024. It generated more than $5.8 million in export turnover, an impressive increase of 89% compared to September.

India still remained the largest market of Vietnamese star anise exports in October. The export amount was 903 tons, a significant rise of 121.3% from the previous month.

In the first 10 months of 2024, Vietnam exported 11,152 tons of star anise, earning an estimated $52.6 million. However, the value decreased of 13.3% compared to the same period in 2023 due to lower selling prices. India was the top export market with 7,395 tons, representing 66.3% of total exports. The United States ranked second with 411 tons, followed by China with 358 tons.

Vietnam is the world’s second-largest producer of star anise after China. The annual output of approximately 22,000 tons grown across 55,000 hectares.

Lang Son province accounts for 72.7% of the cultivation area of Vietnam’s star anise. The region’s unique soil and high-altitude terrain make it ideal for star anise cultivation. Generations of farmers in Lang Son have sustained this tradition, planting trees that yield harvests for over a century.

The World Spice Association recognizes star anise as a valuable spice. Especially, it is primarily grown in Vietnam and China, with only two harvest seasons each year.

In Vietnam, star anise is mainly cultivated in northern border provinces like Lang Son and Cao Bang. In which, Lang Son, the capital of star anise, boasts over 43,000 hectares, accounting for 70% of the nation’s total cultivation area. The province is now focusing on expanding organic star anise farming.

Vietnam’s star anise has gained international acclaim for its distinctive aroma and versatile applications in the food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries. Key markets include South Asia (India and Bangladesh), the Middle East, Japan, China, South Korea, the United States, and EU countries. India and China remain the two largest export markets, accounting for 50% and 25% of total exports, respectively.

Vietnam is strengthening its position as a key supplier in the global spice and flavoring market, which valued at $21.3 billion in 2021 and projected to grow to $27.4 billion by 2026.
