The price of Hoa Loc mangoes has risen sharply

The price of Hoa Loc mangoes has increased by 1.5 times compared to the beginning of the year. Moreover, this rise is due to reduced supply while consumer demand remains high.

In Hon Dat commune (An Giang), traders are buying Hoa Loc mangoes at 40,000–60,000 VND per kilogram. Furthermore, this price is about 15,000–20,000 VND higher than early this year and the same period in 2024. At this price level, farmers earn a profit of 10,000–20,000 VND per kilogram, but the output has declined.

Mr. Nguyễn Thành Đô is the Director of Hon Dat Hoa Loc Mango Cooperative. He said that this year’s off-season mangoes saw a 20% drop in production at his facility. As a result, heavy rains reduced fruit setting and made high-quality, visually appealing mangoes scarce.

“Many households no longer have mangoes to sell because they are inducing flowering for the Tet crop. Supply to the market is very limited, so prices are being pushed up,” he said.

Another farmer in An Giang shared that from August to October, production costs are high. Specifically, each kilogram of finished mango costing 35,000–40,000 VND, while yields are low. Therefore, only well-managed orchards can make good profits. Besides weather factors, the reduction in mango-growing areas also contributes to the scarcity. This is because many households have switched to planting jackfruit and durian.

In Ho Chi Minh City, the retail price of Hoa Loc mangoes ranges from 80,000 to 140,000 VND per kilogram, depending on the grade. Many vendors say this is the highest price since the beginning of the year.

Ms. Hạnh is the owner of a fruit shop in An Hoi Dong ward. She said that grade-A mangoes cost 100,000–110,000 VND per kilogram at the wholesale market. Therefore, she sells them at 120,000 VND per kilogram at her shop.

Ms. Hoàng Anh is the owner of a shop at Bà Chiểu Market. According to her, mangoes are currently the most expensive domestic fruit, costlier even than durians. Then, she has to stock more grade-B and grade-C options for customers. As for organic mangoes, customers must pre-order them at 180,000–200,000 VND per kilogram.

A representative of the Thủ Đức wholesale market confirmed that the supply of mangoes arriving at the market is currently very low due to the off-season. Meanwhile, consumer demand has surged sharply during the seventh lunar month, pushing prices up.

In high-end retail chains, the “Uncle Chín” branded Hoa Loc mangoes are sold at 189,000 VND per kilogram for the king-mango grade. This price is much higher than that of many imported varieties.

Mr. Nguyễn Đình Tùng is the CEO of a Vietnamese mango export company. He said that shipments to the United States remain stable. However, because the percentage of high-quality fruit is low, prices have increased even further.

Hoa Loc mangoes are difficult to preserve and most have to be transported by air to maintain quality, which raises costs,” he said. He added that he expects exports to accelerate in about a month when the main harvest season begins and supply becomes abundant.

According to the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association, Vietnamese mango exports reached $265.9 million in the first seven months of the year. Fresh mangoes accounted for $189.7 million—an increase of 12.2% year-on-year.

Vietnam currently has more than 114,000 hectares of mango orchards, concentrated largely in the Mekong Delta provinces such as Đồng Tháp, An Giang, Sơn La, and Đồng Nai. In An Giang alone, there are over 12,000 hectares of mangoes, half of which are located in Chợ Mới District.
