Vietnamese asparagus exports can enter into the Australian market

The Vietnamese Trade Office in Australia has coordinated with local importers to be ready to receive Vietnamese asparagus exports as early as this March. They also have plans for stable procurement.

According to the Vietnamese Trade Office in Australia, amid fluctuations in agricultural trade, the Ministry of Industry and Trade has directed efforts to boost agricultural exports.

Currently, in addition to ongoing export promotion activities, the Vietnamese Trade Office in Australia has promptly facilitated the procurement and export of 5 tons of dragon fruit in early February. This supported farmers when they needed it most.

The Vietnamese Trade Office has recognized the need to diversify fresh agricultural exports from Vietnam to Australia. This is especially important for products that do not require market access negotiations and can be exported immediately. During meetings with Australian importers last week, the Trade Office identified fresh asparagus as a suitable and high-value agricultural product.

Currently, Vietnamese asparagus exports are absent from the Australian market. This is despite the fact that Australia imports large quantities of asparagus, mainly from Mexico and Peru. In 2019, asparagus imports into Australia reached nearly 18 million USD (ITC data). In Vietnam, asparagus is available in several regions, including Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Binh Thuan, and Hanoi.

The Trade Office has coordinated with Australian importers to be ready to receive Vietnamese asparagus as early as this March. Plans are in place for stable imports. Exporters, cooperatives, and asparagus farmers who meet biosecurity requirements can contact the Trade Office to connect directly with importers.

The Vietnamese Trade Office in Australia hopes that seeking opportunities to diversify export products will benefit farmers. This is particularly relevant for products that do not require market access negotiations, helping farmers avoid over-concentrating production on a few crops.

Such over-concentration carries high risks during market fluctuations. If Vietnam’s asparagus can establish a brand and reputation in Australia, it could open significant opportunities for this promising agricultural sector in the global market.

Exporting Vietnamese asparagus to Australia does not require an import license. However, shipments will be available for compliance with Australia’s biosecurity regulations. Particular attention will be given to ensuring they are free from thrips infestation.
