During the same 2016–2020 period, Vietnamese macadamia exports reached USD 59.6 million. Export volume exceeded 3,000 tons of kernels and 390 tons of in-shell macadamia nuts. Vietnamese macadamia has been available to 21 countries and territories. These include Thailand, Germany, Malaysia, Hong Kong, the Netherlands, and the United States.
According to the General Department of Forestry under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, during the 2016–2020 period, Vietnam’s total macadamia import turnover reached USD 136.8 million. This came with a volume of nearly 5,400 tons of kernels and 25,500 tons of in-shell macadamia nuts.
Macadamia products in Vietnam are mainly available in the form of dried nuts and kernels. Meanwhile, value-added products derived from macadamia, such as milk, coffee, cooking oil, and shampoo, have also begun to gain acceptance and consumption in the domestic market.
The fact that Vietnamese macadamia has successfully entered major and highly demanding international markets is significant. It has also established a presence in the domestic market. This is creating strong opportunities for the further development of macadamia cultivation in Vietnam.
Vietnamese macadamia exports
Developing Vietnamese macadamia exports into an efficient and sustainable production sector is a key objective. It is outlined in the “Sustainable Macadamia Development Plan for the 2021–2030 period, with a vision to 2050.”
The plan targets macadamia output after processing at around 130,000 tons of nuts by 2030. By 2050, it is likely to reach approximately 500,000 tons. Export value is likely to reach about USD 400 million by 2030 and USD 2.5 billion by 2050. In addition, in-shell macadamia is likely to account for no more than 40% of total production.
Mr. Tran Quang Bao is the Deputy Director General of the General Department of Forestry. Regarding market development, he emphasized the domestic market. He stated that local authorities should support branding efforts for Vietnamese macadamia products. These should link with geographical indications, along with trade and communication activities to improve consumer awareness.
For export markets, localities should coordinate closely with ministries, agencies, and Vietnam’s macadamia enterprises. This coordination aims to expand export markets and remove trade barriers. The government has made priorities for boosting official exports of kernels, in-shell nuts, and deeply processed macadamia products.
Off-shell macadamia from Vietnam
Although macadamia nuts are highly popular and easy to consume, the crop requires a long production cycle of 5–7 years before bearing fruit. As a result, investment in macadamia cultivation is a “long-term bet” for farmers. If using unsuitable planting materials, the economic risks can be significant.
In this regard, Tran Quang Bao noted that the General Department of Forestry has developed implementation plans. These plans guide localities in effectively carrying out the development project. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has also issued technical guidelines on cultivation, processing, and preservation. It has also set standards for macadamia planting materials.
Globally, current macadamia supply meets only about 25% of demand. Meanwhile, the market has been growing at an average rate of 15% per year. According to forecasts from the International Nut and Dried Fruit Council (INC), by 2030 supply is likely to meet only about 50% of global demand.
Although Vietnam’s macadamia industry remains relatively small, this presents a significant opportunity. It allows the country to develop in a more structured and systematic way from the beginning. This helps avoid the fragmented and spontaneous expansion seen in some other agricultural sectors.
Fresh macadamia from Vietnam
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) stated that it will coordinate with other ministries, sectors, and local authorities. The goal is to review, assess, and determine suitable land areas and production scales for macadamia cultivation. The ministry will also guide pilot planting projects at appropriate scales, evaluate their effectiveness, and expand them to selected localities if successful.
At the same time, MARD will work with the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Vietnam Macadamia Association, and relevant stakeholders. This cooperation will support supply forecasting and analysis of domestic and export demand. It will also help orient development strategies and adjust production plans when necessary.
Vietnamese macadamia nuts are popular for their high nutritional value and pleasant flavor. This makes them particularly suitable for food processing. The kernels have a mild aroma and are commonly used as fillings for pastries, chocolates, ice cream, and boxed confectionery products. They are also consumed directly in canned form and are highly popular in markets such as the United States and the European Union.
