In March 2025, Vietnam’s star anise exports reached 1,469 metric tons in volume. The export value was worth at $5 million, a sharp increase of 102.9% compared to the previous month. India was the largest export market, importing 1,111 tons, an increase of nearly 5% compared to February 2025.

Cumulatively, in the first quarter of 2025, Vietnam exported 3,495 tons of star anise. The export turnover reached $12.2 million, acccordingly. These amounts showed an increase of 57.3% in volume and 2.2% in value compared to the same period last year. Agrideco Vietnam Co., Ltd was one of the largest star anise exporters in Vietnam.

According to the World Spice Association, star anise is a rare and valuable spice plant. Star anise trees are available almost exclusively in Vietnam and China, with only two harvest seasons per year. In Vietnam, star anise is mainly available in northern border provinces such as Lang Son and Quang Ninh, bringing high economic value.

Star anise has many medicinal benefits, such as treating colds, relieving pain, and preventing infections. Additionally, it is a vital ingredient as a cooking spice to enhance the flavor of dishes, especially in pho, Vietnam’s signature noodle soup. Thanks to its numerous beneficial uses, star anise is familiar with consumers around the world. In addition to domestic consumption, it is also exported to many countries.

Notably, Vietnam’s star anise exports from Lang Son, the “capital” of star anise, have reached many countries in the world. Namely, they are China, India, Malaysia, the United Kingdom, the United States, France, Japan, and Germany.

In addition to direct exports, Lang Son’s star anise also has its presence through global e-commerce platforms such as Amazon. Recently, India and China have become the two main export markets for Vietnamese star anise, accounting for an average market share of 50% and 25%, respectively.

India is one of the world’s leading consumers of Vietnamese cinnamon and star anise. Also. it is also a major producer of medicinal herbs. Currently, Vietnam dominates the Indian market for these spices, holding over 80% of the market share.

Moreover, the country has a population of over one billion, with more than 60% being young people. Therefore, India is an attractive and promising market for Vietnamese exporters of spices. India’s consumer spending will rise from the current $1.5 trillion to nearly $6 trillion by 2030, opening up numerous opportunities for Vietnamese products, particularly in the agricultural and spice sectors.

Vietnam is currently one of the world’s leading spice exporters. Specifically, Vietnam holds the number one position globally in both the production and export of pepper. Also, it ranks first in cinnamon exports, and is the second largest exporter of star anise worldwide. Other spices such as chili, cloves, ginger, cardamom, and nutmeg also occupy significant positions within Vietnam’s spice export portfolio.
