Currently, local people growing star aniseed in Binh Lieu district are rushing to harvest star anise. Notably, before the Lunar New Year, the price of buying dry star aniseed was about 130,000 VND/kg, so far, people have sold it for nearly 320,000 VND/kg, 2-3 times higher than previous years.
Growers in the district are mobilizing human resources and vehicles to harvest and transport star aniseed to traders. Dry star aniseed reaches high price and productivity, which leads local growers very happy. When the season is good, the price is good, so everyone is excited.
Mr. Hoang, a grower said: “At this time, the whole commune focuses on harvesting and selling star anise. My family has three hectares of star anise, which produces a lot of fruits this season. We estimate to harvest more than four tons of fresh star anise, earning about 200 million VND”.
In Binh Lieu, anise is mostly grown in three communes as Dong Van, Dong Tam, Hoanh Mo, with a total area of more than 7,000 hectares. Fifteen-year-old star anise trees can be harvested two crops per year. Namely, the spring crop lasts in February and March and the autumn crop lasts September and October.
Star aniseed trees are especially suitable for areas with cool climates, with large temperature fluctuations between day and night. Therefore, quality of dry star aniseed in Binh Lieu is very good. According to statistics of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, one hectare generates an average yield of 1.5 tons of fruits.
With the natural care method of cultivation, which is not to use fertilizers, or to spray pesticides, dry star aniseed here is very clean. These are the advantage factors that Binh Lieu star anise is popular in the market.
Ms. Sai, a trader in Hoanh Mo commune, said: “Since the beginning of season, my family has purchased nearly 100 tons of dry star aniseed, with the purchase price more than 300 million VND per ton. The variety of anise growing in Binh Lieu is a type of anise with 8 petals, thick and large fruit with a lot of essential oil. Therefore, we buy and sell quickly at a good level of price.
In this year’s crop, people in Binh Lieu have harvested from the end of January, 2021. Up to now, it is estimated that the whole district has harvested more than 100 tons of dry star aniseed. If star anise still maintains its current good price, the harvesting process will be done more quickly, completed in mid-March.
According to a local governor: “The economic value of star anise over the past time has not only brought income and improved people’s lives, but also contributed to promoting sustainable values from forests. It is expected that this year the whole district can harvest more than 300 tons of dry star aniseed.
In order to ensure the production target, in the coming time, the district will continue to propagate and mobilize growing households to take good care of their plants and improve the quality of star anise.
