Thanks to Vietnam’s organic ginger for export, the highland Lục Khu area in Cao Bằng Province, has undergone significant changes. Therefore, the living standards and incomes of ethnic minority communities have improved markedly.
Lục Khu is the collective name for 12 particularly poor communes in Hà Quảng District, Cao Bằng Province. Over the past six years, this highland region has undergone remarkable transformation. The livelihoods of local ethnic minority communities have become more stable and prosperous thanks to ginger cultivation.
In 2016, the Hà Quảng District authorities launched a campaign. The initiative was part of efforts to restructure agricultural production to better suit the area’s terrain and natural conditions. Through this initiative, residents were encouraged to reclaim unused land for cultivation. In which, Vietnam’s organic ginger for export was a key crop for development.
Vietnam’s organic ginger for export
To establish an organic ginger production area, Hà Quảng District has set a target of expanding the cultivation area to 1,000 hectares by 2030. Owing to the strong economic returns generated by ginger farming, the number of participating households has increased steadily over the years. To date, nearly 60% of households in Lục Khu have joined the production program of Vietnam’s organic ginger for export. They include the Mong, Tày, and Nùng ethnic groups.
In recent years, local ethnic minority households have increasingly adopted organic ginger cultivation practices to meet market demand. Under this approach, farmers receive training in modern farming techniques. They also benefit from stable purchasing prices through contract farming arrangements with Vietnamese ginger businesses.
Many ethnic minority households have overcome concerns about market access through technical training, cultivation guidance, expanded production areas, and commitments to support product consumption. Consequently, they have actively adopted new farming methods. Farmers have also changed their mindset and production practices by reducing the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides.
Instead, they apply organic fertilizers, composted livestock manure, and green manure to nourish their crops. As a result, organically grown ginger has thrived, generating higher incomes and improving livelihoods for local communities.
Following the successful pilot implementation in Hà Quảng District, Vietnam’s export businesses recognized that Cao Bằng Province’s climate and soil conditions are highly suitable for ginger cultivation. As a result, they expanded contract farming agreements with growers in several other districts to cultivate ginger and market it through value-chain linkages.

The organic ginger production model has helped improve living standards and increase incomes for ethnic minority communities in the Lục Khu region. It is also a model that Cao Bằng Province plans to replicate in other districts with suitable natural and soil conditions in the coming years.
At the same time, the province will continue to strengthen awareness campaigns. It will also encourage farmers to develop ginger production on a commercial scale through clear priorities and targeted planning. Efforts will also focus on applying scientific and technological advances in production. In addition, attention will be given to restructuring crop systems and adopting high-yield, high-quality organic ginger varieties.
Particular emphasis will be placed on expanding clean organic ginger cultivation models that meet export requirements. These initiatives are likely to strengthen value-chain linkages, enhance product value, and generate higher incomes for local ethnic minority communities.
Cao Bằng has implemented several organic agricultural production models supported by contract farming arrangements with businesses and has achieved encouraging results. Among the most notable is the partnership model between enterprises and farmers for organic ginger cultivation in Hà Quảng District.
