Thirty-seven households of the Xo Dang ethnic group in Dak Na Commune, Tu Mo Rong District, have joined a production linkage program of Vietnamese ginger for export. Through this program, they earn an income of about VND 100 million per hectare.
In early May, dozens of farmers in Kon Trai Village were busy plowing fields and preparing raised beds. At the same time, they were getting ready to plant ginger on a 16-hectare cultivation area located on the slopes of the Ngoc Linh Mountain range. Households that had planted earlier were applying fertilizer and removing weeds. Ginger typically gives harvest after eight months of cultivation and care.
This year, Mr. A Le, 54, together with a cooperative group in Kon Trai Village, is cultivating six hectares of ginger within the raw-material production area. Seed ginger, fertilizers, and technical guidance are provided by the commune authorities and the cooperative. Meanwhile, local farmers contribute their labor. Members share responsibilities and take turns caring for the crop and applying fertilizer until harvest.
Vietnamese ginger for export
Last year, Mr. Le’s family also participated in cultivating six hectares of Vietnamese ginger for export. The harvested ginger was purchased at a price of more than VND 7,000 per kilogram. This allowed each household to earn tens of millions of dong.
“In the past, we mainly relied on cassava cultivation, and our livelihoods were very unstable. Since joining the ginger-growing model, our family’s economic situation has improved significantly,” Mr. Le said.
Mr. Ha Van Phuong is the Director of the Tu Mo Rong Agricultural Products and Herbal Cooperative. He said that in late 2021, the cooperative conducted surveys. The results showed that Dak Na Commune was highly suitable for developing a ginger-growing area for export to Euro. Therefore, the cooperative encouraged 15 households to establish a three-hectare cultivation area for ginger and turmeric.
Participating households received seed stock support from the Dak Na Commune People’s Committee. Meanwhile, the cooperative provided technical assistance and guaranteed purchases at prices ranging from VND 7,000 to VND 10,000 per kilogram. With proper care, ginger yields average 12–15 tons per hectare. As a result, it generates profits of more than VND 100 million per hectare.
After three years of implementation, the program has expanded to 37 households growing ginger and five households cultivating turmeric. According to Mr. Phuong, ginger cultivation has proven more economically effective than growing rice or cassava.
Dried ginger from Vietnam
Mr. Phuong explained that because the ginger is produced for export to Europe, all cultivation and management practices must comply with strict, high-standard technical requirements. The products must contain no prohibited substances or remain below the allowable limits for the 1,176 restricted substances listed under applicable regulations. Fertilizers and crop-protection products used in production are entirely biological in nature.
Notably, every batch of Vietnamese ginger for export is traceable through a digital application. This application records detailed cultivation and management logs throughout the production process.
“We are planning to expand the cultivation area to 100 hectares of ginger, turmeric, and garlic over the next three years. The goal is to increase local incomes while supplying raw materials for processing and export to international markets,” Mr. Phuong said.
Mr. Vo Trung Manh is the Chairman of the Tu Mo Rong District People’s Committee. He said that this is a new model for the Xo Dang ethnic community. Ginger does not require highly complex cultivation techniques and uses organic farming methods. Therefore, it is well suitable for the traditional agricultural practices of the Xo Dang people.
