Hà Nam Commune: Enhancing the brand value of Vietnamese guava exports

In recent years, Hà Nam Commune has successfully developed the brand for Vietnamese guava exports. The fruit has become the locality’s flagship agricultural product and serves as the backbone of its rural economy.

Hà Nam Commune is currently the locality with the largest guava-growing area in Hai Phong city, covering 1,300 hectares. After decades of cultivation and dedicated care from local farmers, Vietnamese guava orchards have gradually replaced rice fields to become the commune’s dominant crop. Compared with traditional farming, guava cultivation generates significantly higher economic returns. It provides farmers with annual profits of approximately VND 250–300 million per hectare.

Ms. Lương Thị Cúc is the Deputy Director of Nam Vũ Clean Agricultural Products Cooperative. She said: “In the past, Vietnamese guava helped local people escape poverty. Today, it has become the crop that creates wealth for the community. That is why farmers have continuously sought stable and sustainable ways to develop this key agricultural product.” Beyond providing a reliable source of income, guava has also created new opportunities for sustainable agricultural development in the commune.

To enhance product value, Hà Nam’s growers have taken the lead in adopting VietGAP standards, ensuring strict compliance with food safety requirements. Rather than relying on traditional farming practices, orchard owners now follow standardized production procedures. These include maintaining detailed cultivation records and using only approved fertilizers and crop protection products.

Ms. Nguyễn Thị Sự is a farmer from Mạc Thủ 1 Hamlet. She said: “Clean production practices bring many practical benefits. They not only improve guava quality but also reduce production costs and minimize environmental impacts. More importantly, partnerships with businesses and cooperatives have made it easier to market Vietnamese guava exports.” The development of concentrated production areas has also improved the efficiency of cultivation, harvesting, and transportation.

Recognizing guava as its core competitive advantage, Hà Nam’s local authorities have placed particular emphasis on building a strong product brand. Vietnamese guava exports are now marketed with professional packaging, labeling, and transparent traceability systems to strengthen consumer confidence.

Thanks to these investments in both quality and presentation, Hà Nam guavas are now available in numerous supermarkets and convenience stores. In particular, the product’s 4-star OCOP (One Commune One Product) certification has become an important milestone. It has enhanced the product’s reputation and created opportunities for further market expansion.

In addition to fresh fruit production, the commune has embraced a value-added approach through deep processing. Ms. Nguyễn Thị Ngọc Lan is one example of a young entrepreneur who returned to her hometown after graduating from university to start a business. Recognizing the untapped potential of guava leaves, she developed and launched Mộc Nam Guava Bud Tea.

“I realized that the guava tree offers value not only from its fruit but also from its young buds. By making full use of the plant’s potential, we can generate much greater economic value,” Ms. Lan said.

Innovation has also extended to the service sector, with several households combining guava orchards with eco-tourism and experiential tourism models. Fruit-laden orchards have become not only production sites but also attractive destinations for visitors, providing an effective way to promote the commune’s specialty products.

According to Mr. Phạm Đức Ban, Chairman of the Hà Nam Commune People’s Committee, the locality is working to fully capitalize on this potential. The commune hopes to receive continued support from higher authorities in protecting the Hà Nam guava brand. It also seeks assistance in introducing advanced production technologies as it works toward future export markets.

From a traditional farming community, Hà Nam is steadily transforming itself through a modern agricultural development strategy. By integrating concentrated production, deep processing, and experiential tourism, the commune is not only increasing the value of Vietnamese guava exports. It is also advancing its goal of building a safe and sustainable agricultural sector while improving the livelihoods of local residents.
