Vietnam carrot tree, which has become a traditional crop in Hai Duong province, enriched farmers for more than 40 years. Up to now, the whole area of carrot growing in the province has been produced in VietGAP standards, ensuring food safety.

Presently, the area of Vietnam carrot in Cam Giang district is 550 hectares all year, with capacity of 50 MT/ha and annual output of 20,000 MTs. The winter – spring crop of carrots concentrated in the rich land along Thai Binh river. Vietnam carrot has gradually developed and affirmed the brand. Especially, Vietnam carrot has granted a collective trademark certificate by the National Office of Intellectual Property since 2008.

Also, according to Mr. Cong, a half of district’s carrot production was purchased and processed by local factories for export. There are more than ten carrot processing factories, which are mostly located in Hai Duong province. The main export markets for Vietnam carrot are Malaysia, South Korea, Japan, and UAE.

This winter season, favorable weather helps carrots grow and develop well, less pests and diseases, better design than previous years. At present, the early harvesting carrot farms have an average yield of more than 50MT per hectare. In the next two weeks when the main season comes, the average yield will probably reach to approximately 60MT per hectare.

Accroding to a director of a Vietnam carrot export company, in the crop of 2021, the export market of Vietnam carrot will have more positive signs than previous years. In addition to traditional markets in Asia, more and more customers from Europe show interests in buying fresh carrot from Vietnam.

Although the carrot production of Cam Giang district is large, the harvest time is only about three months, while there are few purchasing enterprises. Moreover, the cold storage system for carrots and the post-harvest product processing technology are not good, which cannot meet export requirements. As a result, all of these limitations of Vietnamese carrot lead to low value of post-harvest products.

Based on export enterprises of Vietnamese carrot, the requirement of traceability for agricultural products in general is very urgent. Therefore, in the coming time, the province should manage codes of growing areas and packing houses. Besides, the investment in high-tech preliminary processing technology for carrots is also an urgent requirement. Currently, export markets have required preliminary processing lines to ensure very strict conditions for storage technology, treatment with ice cold water during the process of applying preservation technology.
