Fresh grapefruit from Vietnam has been officially allowed to export to South Korea. Thus, after dragon fruit and mango, grapefruit is the third fruit that has presence at this market. With a population of 50 million, South Korea is a potential market for Vietnamese grapefruit.
Vietnam currently has more than 100,000 hectares of grapefruit, with an output of more than 900,000 tons. The Mekong Delta alone accounts for about 32,000 hectares. With an output of about 370,000 tons, the Mekong Delta is a key production area. Famous grapefruit varieties with great export potential include: green-skin grapefruit, Nam Roi grapefruit, Tan Trieu grapefruit.

Thus, after about two years of negotiations, fresh grapefruit from Vietnam has the opportunity to be present in South Korea. The Plant Protection Department recommends that Vietnam’s grapefruit companies carefully study the requirements for plant quarantine. Moreover, these companies should promptly implement trade and export promotion activities.
Mr. Tuyen, Head of the Trade Office in Korea said: “On average, Korea imports about $20 million worth of grapefruit from countries around the world every year. Of which, the United States exports about $8 million, Israel supplies $7.5 million and South Africa exports about $4.5 million. Obviously, the current turnover of Vietnamese grapefruit is still small. Therefore, the opportunity to increase this product is very huge in the coming time”.

Another advantage is that Vietnam currently has a large growing area. There are several famous Vietnamese grapefruit brands that have also been popular to Korean consumers.
Regarding the specific technical and quarantine standards for the Korean market, Mr. Tuyen shared: “There are eight steps to process Vietnam’s grapefruit for export to Korea. They are registering growing areas, classifying, hot steam treatment, packaging and labeling as well as pre-clearance inspection, export inspection and certification, import inspection and other requirements”.

For grapefruit, when exporters and growers need to pay attention to two types. First, if live flies are detected in the export shipment to Korea, the shipment will be forced to ship back. In addition, the export inspection will be suspended until the cause and remedy are determined. Second, if the fruit borer pest is detected, the shipment will be turned back also.
Assessing the market, the Vietnam’ Trade Office in Korea also made a number of recommendations, specifically for businesses as well as growers. In addition to market research, building a promotion and marketing strategy, the quality control is a particularly important stage.

Notably, we should also research and strive to produce organic grapefruit in Vietnam. Having these organic certification standards will help our grapefruit have higher value in the Korean market. Currently, in addition to understanding grapefruit is good for health, Korean consumers do not know how to eat grapefruit to make it delicious. Therefore, the methods of eating and choosing grapefruit need to be more popular for Koreans.
The Plant Protection Department assessed that this is an important step forward, opening up great opportunities for Vietnamese agricultural products to access the international market. Before Korea, a number of large markets such as the United States, New Zealand also licensed fresh Vietnamese grapefruit. Currently, Vietnamese grapefruit has presence at 13 countries and territories. It is forecasted that by 2025, this number will increase thanks to the addition of the Australian market.
