By late November, the weather in Nghia Lo had turned little cold. Thanh Luong Commune’s fields were bustling with locals tending to their crops. Chili fields, planted nearly two months ago, are now taking root and growing lush, promising a bountiful harvest.
Ms. Heo’s family, from Thanh Luong Commune, planted 1,000 square meters of chili during the winter 2023 season. They sold to an organic chili company at 7,000 VND per kilogram, generating an income of over 40 million VND. Seeing the promising economic returns, the family quickly prepared to plant over 2,000 square meters of chili.

Ms. Heo shared that she buys chili variety from a local seeding company. After three months, chili trees begin to yield fruit. The harvesting period lasts for from three to four months. Thanks to the favorable soil and technical guidance, organic chili produces higher income compared to corn, rice, and other crops.
Like Ms. Heo’s family, Mrs. Nga and her husband are busy setting up stakes to support their chili plants. These stakes will prevent them from toppling as they bear fruit. This winter, Mrs. Nga’s family planted 2,500 square meters of Vietnam’s organic chili, using the bell chili variety.

Harvesting organic chili
According to Mrs. Nga, her family grew watermelons, cucumbers, and other vegetables during the winter season. In recent years, she switched to growing organic chili, which offers higher yields. In addition, longer harvest period and guarantee from the purchasing companies would reduce risks and ensure stable income. On average, 1,000 square meters of organic chili yields more than six tons of fruit.

They require the farming process to follow organic practices, meeting strict quality and safety standards. The primary fertilizer used is well-composted manure, while pest control is managed through biological products. Local farmers should cover chili beds with plastic to reduce weeds. During the harvest season, company technical staff directly inspect the quality before purchasing.

Ms. Vy, the leader of the chili export cooperative in Thanh Luong Commune, shared that after visiting a chili cultivation model in other provinces, some local households converted their rice fields to grow export-quality chili. Seeing the higher economic returns compared to other crops, more and more families have switched to chili farming.
According to a technical expert, growing organic chili for Japan requires farmers to follow strict procedures from land preparation, planting, care to harvesting.
To produce high-quality chili for export, the company guides people to choose and prepare soil that is not contaminated with chemicals. Improve the soil by applying organic fertilizers to increase soil porosity and improve soil fertility.
In addition, the company encourages growers to apply the method of rotating 1 rice crop and 1 chili crop. This will help minimize pests and diseases and not deplete the soil of nutrients.
