Every year from July to September, Mộc Châu enters its avocado harvest season. Over the years, Vietnamese avocado cultivation has thrived on the plateau, producing high yields. Its flavorful fruit has also gained widespread popularity among consumers. Vietnamese avocados have gradually established a strong reputation and generated significant income for local farmers.
Thanks to its economic benefits, Vietnamese avocado cultivation has expanded across the district. It is particularly concentrated in Mộc Châu, Đông Sang, Mường Sang, Nà Mường, Hua Păng, Tà Lại, Phiêng Luông, Tân Lập, and Chiềng Hắc.
Mộc Châu avocados vary in shape depending on the variety. Most have a pear-shaped appearance. Off-season varieties are typically elongated, while the Booth variety is generally round.
Vietnamese avocado cultivation
Among the avocado varieties grown in Mộc Châu, butter avocado (bơ nếp) and creamy avocado (bơ sáp) are the most popular. Avocados are highly nutritious, containing more than 14 vitamins and minerals. Notably, their protein content is nearly comparable to that of milk. They are also naturally cholesterol-free, making them a healthy food choice. In addition, avocados are rich in antioxidants, helping reduce the risk of cancer, cataracts, and premature skin aging.
In 2020, Mộc Châu District’s avocado-growing area reached 496 hectares, with an estimated output of 2,806 tonnes. Compared with 2018, this represented an increase of approximately 420 hectares in cultivated area and 2,220 tonnes in production.
Mộc Châu District possesses favorable climate and soil conditions for developing high-tech agricultural production zones. These advantages have enabled the district to produce high-quality agricultural products with strong market competitiveness. They have also helped local products meet increasingly stringent market requirements.
Vietnamese avocado slices
At Thành Đạt Fruit Cooperative in Chiềng Hắc Commune, Mộc Châu District, avocados have become one of the cooperative’s priority crops alongside mangoes, longans, pomelos, and crisp persimmons. According to Nguyễn Như Biển, Director of the cooperative, Thành Đạt currently cultivates more than 80 hectares of fruit trees. This includes over 20 hectares of Vietnamese avocado cultivation, of which 4 hectares are already in production.
During this year’s avocado harvest, the cooperative expects to produce 100 tonnes of fruit. With current market prices ranging from VND 20,000 to VND 35,000 per kilogram, Vietnamese avocado cultivation is likely to generate substantial income for the cooperative’s members.

To promote high-tech agriculture, Mộc Châu District has stepped up efforts to attract organizations and individuals to invest in Vietnamese avocado cultivation. At the same time, it has encouraged organizations, households, and individuals within designated planning areas to invest independently or form joint ventures by contributing land-use rights as capital. The goal is to foster sustainable agricultural development.
By applying advanced science and technology to agricultural production, Mộc Châu District has achieved impressive agricultural export results in recent years. As a result, the district has attracted a growing number of domestic and international investors. This has led to an increasing number of high-tech farming models that continue to improve in both scale and quality. These developments have contributed significantly to the advancement of agriculture and rural development.
To further promote sustainable agriculture, Mộc Châu District has introduced a range of targeted measures, including strengthening product promotion and marketing. For the district’s key agricultural products, including avocados, authorities aim to establish integrated value chains covering production, processing, and marketing.
