Global pepper supply continues to tighten in 2026. This is due to declining production, low inventories, and sustained strong demand. Together, these factors are creating upward pressure on global pepper prices and Vietnam’s pepper prices.
According to preliminary statistics from the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA), in March 2026, Vietnam exported 30,638 tons of pepper. This included 26,190 tons of black pepper and 4,448 tons of white pepper. Total export turnover reached USD 199.3 million. Black pepper accounted for USD 167.3 million, while white pepper contributed USD 32.0 million.
Compared with February, export volume increased by 119.3%. Compared with March 2025, it rose by 51.3%. This reflects strong recovery momentum in early 2026.
The average export price of black pepper in March reached USD 6,520 per ton. White pepper stood at USD 8,735 per ton. Black pepper prices declined slightly by 0.7%. Meanwhile, white pepper prices increased by 1.0% compared with the previous month.
Vietnam’s pepper
The United States and China remained the two largest export markets for Vietnam’s pepper. Export volume reached 8,059 tons for the U.S. and 3,663 tons for China. Shipments to the U.S. increased by 121.0%. Exports to China surged by 134.7%.
In addition, several markets also recorded strong growth. Egypt increased by 294.5%, the Netherlands by 206.6%, Canada by 205.8%, and the Philippines by 83.6%.
In the first three months of 2026, Vietnam exported a total of 66,350 tons of pepper. This included 55,322 tons of black pepper and 11,018 tons of white pepper. Export value reached USD 430 million. Compared with the same period in 2025, export volume increased by 39.2%, while export value rose by 31.7%. This reflects a clear recovery trend from the beginning of the year.
Major Vietnamese pepper exporters continued to play a leading role in the market. Overall, large enterprises recorded positive growth. This was particularly evident in trading and deep-processing segments.
In terms of export markets, the United States remained the largest destination in the first quarter with 16,859 tons. This accounted for 25.4% of total market share and represented a 63.9% year-on-year increase. China surged strongly to 8,563 tons, up 321.0%, becoming the second-largest market.
Black pepper from Vietnam
The following markets are UAE with 3,182 tons (up 15.4%), India with 2,456 tons (down 27.1%), and the Philippines with 2,383 tons (up 46.9%). Asia continued to be the main growth driver, accounting for 46% of total export volume. The Americas accounted for 28%, while Europe accounted for 20%.
According to VPSA, pepper prices remain at high levels. However, replanting activities still remain limited due to competition from more profitable crops and a lack of available land. This makes it difficult to expand cultivation area in 2026.
Global pepper production in 2026 is likely to reach around 530,000 tons. This is slightly higher than 2025 but still lower than 2024 levels. Meanwhile, demand remains strong.
In Vietnam, output in 2026 of Vietnam’s pepper is likely to reach 170,000–180,000 tons. This represents a decline of 15–20% year-on-year due to adverse weather conditions, reduced cultivation area, and competition from alternative crops.
Carryover inventories have nearly been depleted, with only around 40,000 tons remaining in Vietnam. This increases vulnerability to supply disruptions. In January 2026, the Central Highlands region is also likely to face weather volatility. This could further tighten supply conditions.
