In Bản Mới Village, Hiệp Lực Commune, Thái Nguyên Province, Thành Đạt High-Tech Agricultural Cooperative has transformed low-yield farmland into a modern greenhouse complex of Vietnamese melon. By applying advanced farming technologies and digital solutions, the cooperative has not only increased production value. It has also created stable employment opportunities for local residents.
According to Thái Nguyên Newspaper, Thành Đạt High-Tech Agricultural Cooperative initially cultivated a diverse range of crops, including medicinal herbs, aromatic plants, vegetables, and livestock. However, after evaluating the economic performance of its production models, the cooperative found that melons delivered significantly higher returns. It therefore decided to focus its investment on this crop. The cooperative mobilized resources to systematically develop a high-tech melon production area.
The cooperative’s journey began in 2018, when it first introduced greenhouse melon cultivation on a few hundred square meters of land. Following several successful harvests, it expanded its production area to more than 3,200 square meters by 2021. Alongside this expansion, the cooperative continuously refined its production processes. This ensured they aligned with the standards of modern high-tech agriculture.
To ensure consistent fruit quality, the cooperative invested in a modern sensor system that continuously monitors key environmental indicators. These include pH levels, temperature, humidity, and light intensity inside the greenhouses. Its automated irrigation and fertigation systems can be controlled remotely via smartphone. This enables precise management of growing conditions while adjusting water and nutrient supplies according to each stage of plant development.
In addition, the cooperative received support to install a supplemental lighting system covering more than 1,000 square meters of greenhouse space. This technology plays a vital role during cloudy weather and throughout the winter. It promotes uniform plant growth while improving both yield and fruit quality. Thanks to its integrated production system, the cooperative has reduced both labor costs and irrigation water use. These reductions are approximately 50% in comparison to conventional farming methods.
Beyond production, the cooperative has actively embraced digital transformation in product marketing and sales. Its melons are available through Facebook and various online sales platforms. This helps expand market reach and build a stable customer base both within and beyond Thái Nguyên Province. The product has also achieved a 3-star OCOP (One Commune One Product) certification at the provincial level. This further reinforces its position in Vietnam’s growing market for high-quality agricultural products.
Having been one of the cooperative’s loyal customers since its early days, Nông Thị Sen from Vân Tùng Commune said she has been purchasing melons from Thành Đạt High-Tech Agricultural Cooperative for the past seven years. She buys around three tonnes each harvest season. According to her, the cooperative’s melons are highly favorable by consumers because of their crisp texture, natural sweetness, attractive appearance, and consistently high quality. These qualities ensure smooth sales year after year.
The cooperative has also created sustainable livelihood opportunities for many local residents. Nông Thị Hạnh, from Hiệp Lực Commune, who has worked at the cooperative for several years, said the job is well suitable to rural workers and provides a stable source of income. It enables her to support her children’s education and cover household expenses. “The work is not overly demanding, and having a steady job gives me peace of mind and confidence to stay with the cooperative for the long term,” she said.
The model’s economic efficiency is evident in its financial performance. The cooperative grows two melon crops each year, generating an annual profit of approximately VND 500–600 million after expenses. In response to rising market demand, it plans to cultivate a third crop this year. This will make more efficient use of its existing greenhouse facilities while also expanding production further as additional capital and infrastructure become available.
By transforming low-productivity farmland into a modern agricultural production zone, Thành Đạt High-Tech Agricultural Cooperative has built a successful high-tech farming model. Beyond producing premium-quality melons, the cooperative has created stable employment and increased local incomes. It has also demonstrated a sustainable pathway for the development of high-tech agriculture in the region.
