Vietnamese-origin star anise is one of the signature specialties of Lạng Sơn Province and provides a livelihood for thousands of local households. However, achieving sustainable prosperity from Vietnamese star anise requires continuous investment. This includes improving flower quality and developing value-added processed products.
By adopting this approach, a Nùng ethnic woman farmer has earned a profit of approximately VND 700 million (about USD 27,000). In addition, he has also created jobs for dozens of local workers.
The Hoài family’s modest two-story house stands at a small market intersection in Tràng Phái Commune, Văn Quan District, Lạng Sơn Province. Energetic, resourceful, and warm-hearted, these are the qualities that immediately stand out in this Nùng ethnic woman.
In 1993, Hoài got married and started a separate household with her husband. At the time, the couple relied on small-scale trading to make a living. Determined to escape poverty, they decided to invest in an integrated farming model. They focused on both crop cultivation and livestock production.
Vietnamese-origin star anise
Taking advantage of Văn Quan’s extensive star anise-growing areas, the couple boldly invested in a star anise drying facility. They gradually expanded their business while continuously gaining experience and adopting modern processing techniques. Today, the family’s drying facility can process up to one tonne of dried star anise per day. It produces export-quality Vietnamese-origin star anise that meets the requirements of markets such as China and Japan.
Today, Hoài’s family earns an average annual income of more than VND 700 million. Their business also provides stable employment for around 10 local workers. Each worker earns between VND 6 million and VND 9 million per month.
Hoài shared: “I simply take things one step at a time. No one can do everything alone, so as our business grew, we created job opportunities for people in the community. Some had been working as hired laborers or searching for jobs elsewhere. We invited them to work with us instead. The most important thing is to stay determined, never be afraid of hard work, and always focus on doing each job well.”
Broken star anise from Vietnam
In addition to her business success, Đàm Thị Hoài has earned the trust of local residents and has served for many years as Party Cell Secretary and Head of Phai Làng Village in Tràng Phái Commune. Whenever she has free time, she actively shares her production experience. She promotes the application of scientific and technological advances and helps local residents create more jobs and increase their incomes.
In 2016, Hoài donated more than 640 square meters of land for the construction of a multi-purpose building for Tràng Phái Primary and Secondary School. She is also widely respected in the community for her kindness and generosity. She is always willing to lend a helping hand to those in need.
