Gia Lai Province: Vietnamese bananas reach international markets through technological innovation

Gia Lai’s farmers cultivate Vietnamese bananas, using high-tech farming methods, leading to significant improvements in product quality. This approach is also expanding export opportunities and creating sustainable market outlets for farmers in ethnic minority communities.

Gia Lai Province owns favorable natural conditions, fertile basaltic red soil, and tropical climate. Therefore, the province is focusing on developing banana cultivation through high-tech agriculture. This approach aims to enhance the value of banana products and establish Vietnam’s bananas as a key export commodity. It also seeks to create sustainable market opportunities for agricultural products from ethnic minority and mountainous areas.

By the end of 2024, the province’s total fruit-growing area had exceeded 33,000 hectares, more than doubling compared to 2019. Meanwhile, output reached approximately 570,000 tons, representing an average annual growth rate of 37%. Vietnamese bananas have emerged as a key crop, accounting for nearly 7,300 hectares and producing around 237,000 tons annually.

By the first quarter of 2025, Gia Lai had been granted 227 growing-area codes covering nearly 9,700 hectares. Also, it had received 38 packing facility codes with a capacity of 1,500 tons of fresh fruit per day.

These facilities serve exports to demanding markets such as Japan, South Korea, the Middle East, Singapore, and Malaysia. This achievement demonstrates that Vietnamese bananas meet international quality standards while enhancing the reputation of Central Highlands agricultural products.

Bananas have become not only a new source of income but also an important means of livelihood for ethnic minority communities. Fertile basaltic lands in areas such as Đăk Đoa, Ia Phí, and Mang Yang are increasingly being covered with neatly arranged banana plantations. As a result, new opportunities are emerging for sustainable agricultural development.

Mr. Nguyen Quang Anh is the Chairman of a Vietnamese banana export company. He noted that bananas are a characteristic tropical crop with strong demand in temperate countries. The company has invested in Israeli drip-irrigation systems and drone-based technologies for pest monitoring and field management.

It has also developed cold-storage facilities for post-harvest preservation. As a result, the quality of Vietnamese bananas have improved significantly. This enables the company to meet the stringent requirements of international markets.

The company has also developed a contract-farming model that primarily involves ethnic minority farmers. It provides technical support, planting materials, financing, and guaranteed product purchases, creating stable employment for more than 800 local workers. This model helps increase household incomes while reducing dependence on less reliable crops.

Gia Lai Province has placed strong emphasis on developing agricultural value chains to ensure stable market outlets. The province has established fruit-production chains involving 52 enterprises, 58 cooperatives, and 35 farming associations, covering more than 13,000 hectares. Through these linkages, farmers gain access to advanced cultivation techniques, high-quality planting materials, financial resources, and reliable markets. As a result, risks are reduced and product value is increased.

Mr. Doan Ngoc Co is the Deputy Director of the Gia Lai Department of Agriculture and Environment. He stated that the province’s fruit export turnover exceeded USD 150 million in 2024. However, production remains fragmented, and post-harvest processing and storage infrastructure are still limited.

Therefore, the expansion of high-tech applications is regarded as a key strategy for developing bananas into a major export commodity. Meanwhile, stronger cooperation between businesses and farmers is essential to support sustainable growth in the sector.

Ms. Dao Thi Thu Nguyet is the Deputy Director of the Gia Lai Department of Industry and Trade. She emphasized that bananas from the Central Highlands, particularly those from Gia Lai, are increasingly establishing their quality and reputation in international markets. The province will continue creating favorable conditions for businesses to expand production and improve competitiveness. It will also support the development of export markets in Singapore, Malaysia, and the Middle East.

In Đăk Đoa Commune, vast banana plantations stretch across the landscape, where Vietnamese fruit companies have invested heavily in advanced technologies. They include drip irrigation systems, drone-based monitoring, and cable-and-pulley transport systems for harvesting and logistics. These innovations have significantly improved banana quality. As a result, exports have expanded to markets such as China, South Korea, Japan, Singapore, and the Middle East.

The company cultivates 400 hectares of export-oriented bananas alongside medicinal plants. Annual production reaches approximately 12,000 tons, generating revenue of VND 350–400 billion and providing jobs for more than 800 workers. Most of these workers belong to ethnic minority communities.

Gia Lai’s decision to include bananas among its strategic export crops marks an important step in diversifying the province’s agricultural portfolio. As a result, export value of Vietnamese bananas is likely to rise while farmers’ incomes have further improved.

Going forward, Gia Lai will continue encouraging enterprises and cooperatives to expand production areas. In addition, the province will promote investment in storage and processing infrastructure while strengthening the “Central Highlands Bananas” brand in international markets.
