The prices of Vietnamese seedless lime have tripled, but growers have no produce left to sell

As the Lunar New Year approaches, prices of Vietnamese seedless lime have risen sharply. In fact, the prices have reached levels three times higher than those recorded during the same period last year. However, many seedless lime orchards in An Giang are facing shortages. As a result, growers are unable to supply enough produce to meet market demand.

On 10th February 2026, the retail prices of Vietnam’s fresh limes at traditional markets in An Giang ranged from VND 20,000 to 32,000 per kilogram, depending on type and quality. This price level is about three times higher than the same period last year. At that time, prices only ranged from VND 10,000 to 20,000 per kilogram.

Mrs. Nguyễn Thị Thắm is a long-time fruit trader at the Vĩnh Thuận Floating Market. She said that Vietnam’s seedless lime prices have risen rapidly over the past month. “Seedless limes are usually less popular because they contain less juice than regular limes. However, since this is currently the off-season, supply is limited, while export demand toward the end of the year has increased sharply. As a result, prices have surged,” Mrs. Thắm said.

According to traders, the supply of Vietnamese seedless lime arriving at markets is no longer as abundant as before. Meanwhile, consumer demand remains stable and tends to rise slightly as the Lunar New Year approaches. The limited supply is making it difficult for lime prices to decline in the short term.

In Thạnh Hưng Commune, many seedless lime growers are happy with the sharp price increase but are also worried about declining output.

Mrs. Võ Thị Phượng is an owner of five công of seedless lime orchards in the area. She said that prices rose just as her orchard entered the staggered harvest season. However, due to flooding, the productivity of her family’s orchard and those of several neighboring households has fallen by around 50%. Vietnamese fruit companies are currently purchasing local seedless lime at around VND 32,000 per kilogram.

“In previous years, at this time of the season, the orchard could harvest around 500 kilograms. However, this year output is only about 200–300 kilograms. Even so, thanks to prices being many times higher than last year, growers can still earn a fairly good profit,” Mrs. Phượng said.

Speaking with Tuổi Trẻ Online, Mrs. Nguyễn Thị Hằng said that the area devoted to seedless lime cultivation in Thạnh Hưng Commune is not large. In addition, farmers intercrop most orchards with other crops. The sharp rise in lime prices recently has mainly been driven by market factors and reduced supply toward the end of the harvest season.

Recently, the area planted with seedless limes has also tended to shrink as farmers switch to growing durians. Mrs. Hằng said: “We advise farmers to closely monitor market developments and avoid expanding cultivation areas too rapidly in order to prevent risks when prices decline.”

Currently, An Giang province has around 638 hectares of citrus crops, including approximately 136 hectares of Vietnamese seedless lime. These cultivation areas are available across many localities in the province. They include An Châu, Thoại Sơn, Tri Tôn, Tịnh Biên, Châu Phú, Gò Quao, and Giồng Riềng. Most of them operate on a small-scale production basis.

At present, the agricultural sector is supporting the issuance of growing area codes, providing technical guidance, and connecting farmers with purchasing enterprises. The aim is to develop seedless lime production toward export markets and help stabilize output for growers.
